Security Analyst Jobs

Security Analyst jobs in New Zealand sit at the centre of how organisations protect their systems, data, and customers. You will see demand across telcos, cloud-native product companies, SaaS platforms, agriculture tech, and specialist security consultancies. Roles range from 24/7 cyber defence centres through to product security and trust and safety teams focused on abuse prevention. Many employers are building out new security functions, so analysts are joining growing teams rather than stepping into static environments. There is also a mix of office-based SOC roles and distributed teams working remotely with global platforms.

Day-to-day work

Day to day, Security Analysts monitor alerts and events, triage suspicious activity, and respond to threats like phishing, DDoS attacks, malware, cryptomining, and account abuse. You might use tools such as SIEM platforms, IDS and IPS, firewalls, endpoint protection, and cloud monitoring to detect patterns and investigate incidents. In more engineering focused roles, you help design and improve abuse prevention systems, tune security controls, and use AI or automation to reduce manual work. Some positions involve security and compliance testing of cloud native applications, identifying vulnerabilities, and validating that systems meet best practice. Across most roles you will document findings, follow runbooks, work closely with incident response or platform teams, and contribute ideas to strengthen the overall security posture.

Career progression

Careers as Security Analysts often progress into more senior analyst roles, where you handle complex incidents and mentor others. From there, many people move into specialist tracks such as application security, cloud security, or trust and safety engineering on large platforms. Some roles grow into lead positions that own security practices, threat modelling, incident playbooks, and education across the wider engineering group. Others step into consultancy work, advising multiple clients on security strategy, architecture, and advanced controls across Microsoft, AWS, or Google cloud environments. Over time, there is also a path towards security leadership, heading up cyber defence operations or shaping security for fast growing product companies.

Skills employers look for

Employers look for strong critical thinking, curiosity, and the ability to stay calm and methodical under pressure. Clear written and verbal communication matters, because you need to explain risks, document incidents, and work well with both technical and non technical stakeholders. On the technical side, a solid grasp of TCP and IP networking, operating systems like Windows and Linux, and common attack types is important. Many roles ask for experience with SIEM tools, IDS and IPS, firewalls, endpoint protection, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. Certifications like Security+ or CySA+, familiarity with Microsoft security tools, scripting skills, and a habit of continuous learning all help you stand out.
