Financial Analyst Jobs
Financial analyst jobs in New Zealand span global crypto banks, government agencies, advisory firms, and infrastructure businesses. Roles range from FP&A partners in fast growth consumer brands to analysts supporting biosecurity investment planning and agribusiness banking. You will also see opportunities in sustainable waste management, education and social infrastructure, professional services, and investment management firms. Some positions focus on building new commercial frameworks and KPIs, while others emphasise accurate reporting, group consolidation, and tax or audit compliance. Across all of them, the common thread is using financial insight to guide better commercial and strategic decisions.
Day-to-day work
Day to day, you will work with large sets of financial data, turning raw numbers into clear insight. That might mean building and reviewing financial models, forecasting revenue and costs, and analysing P&L results or KPI trends. Many roles involve preparing management and board reports, investigating variances, and explaining what is driving performance across business units or projects. You may also support business cases, capital expenditure decisions, levy and pricing models, or lifecycle and asset planning in long term contracts. Alongside the analysis, you will partner with stakeholders across operations, commercial, banking, or policy teams to translate complex information into practical recommendations.
Career progression
Careers as a financial analyst often progress into senior or lead analyst roles, commercial finance business partnering, or broader advisory positions. In professional services and business advisory firms, experience in analysis and reporting can lead into manager, director, or potential shareholding pathways. Within corporate environments, analysts may move into global FP&A partner roles, group accountant positions, or leadership seats on finance and project teams. Some analysts step sideways into asset management, investment management, or specialist roles in infrastructure, biosecurity, or agribusiness as their sector knowledge deepens. Over time, the combination of technical skills and commercial judgement opens doors to roles that shape strategy rather than only reporting on it.
Skills employers look for
Employers look for strong analytical ability, with proven experience in financial modelling, forecasting, and performance reporting. Many roles ask for CA, CPA, CFA, or similar professional qualifications, plus solid knowledge of GAAP, IFRS, or NZ financial reporting standards and tax requirements. Advanced Excel skills and confidence with BI or reporting tools sit alongside attention to detail, accuracy, and sound internal control awareness. Just as important are communication and relationship skills, so you can challenge assumptions, ask clear questions, and explain complex financial information to non finance stakeholders. A commercial mindset, comfort with problem solving, and the willingness to improve systems, processes, and data quality are highly valued.
