Digital Cloud Solution Architect Jobs
Digital Cloud Solution Architect in New Zealand roles sit at the centre of large-scale digital transformation. These roles usually sit inside technology consultancies, global tech firms, financial services, and public-sector focused teams that work with modern cloud stacks. You’ll see a mix of Azure-first programmes, AWS-focused practices, and hybrid environments that support everything from core banking platforms to AI-led products and open source infrastructure. Many teams are building cloud-native microservices, modern integration layers and AI-enabled solutions, so demand is strongest where organisations are re-platforming legacy systems or scaling new digital products.
Day-to-day work
Day to day, you’ll translate business needs into practical cloud architectures and integration patterns, then guide squads to build them. That can mean designing Azure or AWS reference architectures, defining microservices boundaries, and shaping API and event-driven designs across complex systems. You might run architecture workshops, produce solution and process documentation, and work closely with developers, data engineers, AI specialists and DevOps teams to keep delivery on track. In some environments you stay hands-on with tools like Terraform or Bicep, CI/CD pipelines and container platforms, while also making calls on security, performance, observability and governance for cloud workloads.
Career progression
Careers as a cloud-focused architect often progress into senior solution lead, principal engineer or practice leadership roles. Some move into head of AI and ML positions, owning enterprise-wide data and AI strategy on top of the cloud foundations. Others become delivery leads for multi-year transformation programmes, or step into specialist roles across SAP on Azure, Salesforce and nCino platforms, or open source cloud stacks. Over time, experienced architects are trusted to set technical direction, coach cross-functional teams, and represent their organisation with major partners and enterprise clients.
Skills employers look for
Employers look for deep experience designing cloud-native solutions on platforms like Azure and AWS, often across microservices and API-led integration. Strong grounding in infrastructure, networking, security, identity and automation is essential, along with familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD and infrastructure as code. Many roles value exposure to Kubernetes, OpenStack, data and AI tooling, or enterprise platforms such as SAP, Salesforce or large integration suites. Just as important are stakeholder skills: communicating complex ideas clearly, leading workshops, mentoring engineers, and working comfortably with both technical teams and senior business leaders.
