What you'll do:


As a Senior Cloud Engineer based in Wellington, you will be responsible for leading the transformation of Microsoft cloud platforms that underpin essential public services. Your day-to-day activities will involve architecting secure solutions across Azure and hybrid environments while driving automation through Infrastructure as Code. You will oversee complex migrations and modernisation projects that enhance resilience and performance. By providing senior technical guidance to both internal teams and external partners, you will foster a culture of collaboration and shared success. Your expertise will be instrumental in ensuring operational excellence through proactive monitoring and troubleshooting. The role also involves championing reusable patterns for Azure landing zones and maintaining end-to-end stewardship over critical infrastructure. What you bring:


To excel as a Senior Cloud Engineer in this respected public sector organisation based in Wellington, you will bring deep technical expertise across Microsoft Azure platform engineering combined with advanced skills in Infrastructure as Code. Your proven experience designing secure architectures using Entra ID for identity governance will be complemented by comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration. You should have a strong track record supporting hybrid environments through effective networking configuration and disaster recovery planning. Your ability to deliver trusted technical advice at a senior level will enable you to build dependable relationships within collaborative teams. Evidence of hands-on ownership over Azure landing zones or reusable cloud patterns is highly valued. The ideal candidate demonstrates commitment to continuous improvement through automation initiatives while embracing inclusive practices that foster knowledge sharing. Eligibility for appropriate clearance is essential given the sensitive nature of the work undertaken by this organisation.


  • Extensive hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure platform engineering in large enterprise settings is essential for this role.
  • Deep expertise in Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform (including Terraform-based platform engineering), Bicep, ARM templates, or PowerShell is required.
  • Proven ability to design secure-by-default architectures across Azure cloud services including identity governance via Entra ID.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Microsoft 365 administration including compliance management and modern workplace technologies.
  • Strong background in cloud security principles covering identity management, access control policies, resilience planning, monitoring solutions, and operational support.
  • Experience supporting hybrid infrastructure environments including networking configuration, backup strategies, disaster recovery planning, and platform modernisation initiatives.
  • Demonstrated capability to provide trusted technical advice at a senior level while building dependable relationships with colleagues and external vendors.
  • Evidence of hands-on ownership of Azure landing zones or reusable cloud patterns for end-to-end platform stewardship is highly desirable.
  • Ability to drive automation initiatives through engineering best practice while fostering collaborative teamwork within cross-functional groups.
  • Eligibility for appropriate clearance (NZ citizenship or long-term residency from a five eyes country) is mandatory due to the nature of the organisation's work.
