Job Description

Location: Westgate, Auckland

About the Business:

A place where everyone is welcome. A place where community grows.

At The Salvation Army Westgate, we believe a café can be much more than a place to grab a coffee. It can be a place of connection, belonging, friendship, encouragement, and hope. This is more than a café, it’s a place where community is built, one conversation, one coffee, and one act of kindness at a time.

Join us in creating a space where everyone belongs.

About the Role:

We're looking for a Front of House Café Barista who shares that vision and is excited about creating a warm and welcoming space at the heart of our community. Nestled within the Westgate Mission Centre, our café exists to bring people together, whether they are residents, families, apartment occupants, community groups, volunteers, or those simply looking for a friendly face and a good coffee.

This is a unique opportunity for someone who loves people as much as they love hospitality. You'll help create a place where everyone feels seen, valued, and welcomed.

We're seeking someone with a genuine Christian faith, a gift for building relationships, and the ability to foster a culture of hospitality that reflects God's love in practical ways every day.

What will your responsibilities be:

Customer Service & Hospitality:

  • Prepare and serve high-quality coffee, beverages and food.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service. Create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Build positive relationships with regular customers.
  • Maintain high standards of food presentation and service.
  • Handle customer enquiries professionally.

  • Monitor stock levels.
  • Assist with ordering and stock management.
  • Follow food safety, hygiene and cash-handling procedures.
  • Support opening and closing procedures.
  • Oversee operations when the café Manager is absent.

Community Connection & Engagement:

  • Foster genuine connections with customers and community members.
  • Promote awareness of Salvation Army services where appropriate.
  • Connect people with support services.
  • Capture stories and examples of community impact.
  • Promote belonging and social connection.

Café Environment & Presentation:

  • Maintain a clean, safe and welcoming café environment.
  • Ensure the café, kitchen and foyer areas are presented to a high standard.
  • Support improvements to the customer experience.
  • Ensure displays reflect The Salvation Army mission and values.

Teamwork & Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with church staff, social services staff, Family Store staff and volunteers.
  • Share information and ideas.
  • Raise concerns in a timely manner.
  • Support a positive and respectful team culture.

Leadership Support & Continuous Improvement:

  • Support the café Manager to improve operations, customer experience and business performance.
  • Assist with café development initiatives.
  • Ensure continuity of service during manager absences.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Make great coffee.
  • Experience in café service, hospitality, or community service.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Good cross-cultural understanding.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment, sharing information, ideas and effective practices while maintaining customer and service privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work in a church setting.

Our offer to you:

  • An additional working week of Salvation Army leave awarded annually on 1 July
  • Free confidential counselling services to support your wellbeing
