Who We Are
The Salvation Army’s mission is caring for people, transforming lives and reforming society. We are no ordinary army—we are Te Ope Whakaora, the Army that brings life! Since 1883, our officers, staff and volunteers have fought against poverty, social injustice and spiritual distress by offering hope, comfort and practical support. Each year, we help more than 120,000 individuals and whānau in need with food and clothing assistance, supportive accommodation and transitional housing support, budgeting advice, life skills programmes, addiction services, youth development programmes, and more.

The four nations of New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa make up the ‘territory’ we serve, and we are led by Commissioner Janine Donaldson. Here in Aotearoa, we are committed to honouring Ti Tiriti o Waitangi. In 2023, The Salvation Army’s Territorial Governance Board signed a kawenata (covenant) with the members of the newly formed Rūnanga (council/board), embedding shared authority with Māori into the structure of The Salvation Army and our commitment to upholding the promises of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
