About First Foundation

First Foundation helps young New Zealanders with real potential get through tertiary study when money or networks would otherwise stop them. Our students come from under-resourced backgrounds, and we back them with three things that work together: financial support, paid work experience with an employer in their field, and a mentor who walks alongside them for the four years of their degree.

The mentoring is what holds the rest together. Plenty of young people have the ability and the drive. What they often don't have is someone in their corner who's already walked that road, who can explain how a workplace works, who to ask, and what to do when first year isn't going the way they hoped.

What you would be doing

You're matched with one student and you stay with them through their degree. About an hour a month: a coffee, a call, a few messages in between. Some months it's career talk, some months it's a steadying chat when study isn't going to plan. You'll also be invited to an evening where mentors and students meet in person for the first time, and to optional mentor catch-ups through the year.

Who we're looking for

You don't need a mentoring background. You need life experience, an hour a month you can protect, and genuine interest in a young person's future. We're a national programme and we're currently looking for mentors in Auckland.

How it works

Register your interest and we'll be in touch for a welcome call, then an interview. From there it's one reference check and police vetting, which we pay for. Training comes before you're matched, through the New Zealand Youth Mentoring Network, along with professional development and cultural competency hui with other mentors. Matching happens late in the year.

If an hour a month is something you can give for the next four years, we'd like to hear from you. More about our work at firstfoundation.org.nz
