Heavy Automotive Apprentice Jobs
Heavy automotive apprentice jobs in New Zealand open doors to hands-on careers across transport, engineering, and maintenance. Employers range from specialist truck workshops to national tourism operators running large vehicle fleets. Apprentices support qualified technicians, learn diagnostics and mechanical repair, and gain experience maintaining heavy vehicles like trucks, buses, and commercial fleets. These roles combine practical training with steady career progression in a high-demand trade.
Day-to-day work
As a heavy automotive apprentice, you’ll assist with inspections, maintenance, and repairs on heavy vehicles. Tasks include fault-finding, basic mechanical repairs, and supporting senior technicians with engine, brake, and suspension work. You’ll also help manage tools, follow workshop safety processes, and complete maintenance logs or hazard assessments. Every day is a mix of practical learning and teamwork in a workshop or fleet environment.
Career progression
Careers as a heavy automotive apprentice typically lead to qualified roles such as Diesel Mechanic, Heavy Vehicle Technician, or Auto Electrician. With experience, apprentices can specialise in diagnostics, hydraulics, or electrical systems, or move into senior or workshop management positions. Some graduates progress into engineering, fleet maintenance coordination, or mobile field service work.
Skills employers look for
Employers value strong attention to detail, a positive and safety-focused attitude, and willingness to learn. Practical ability with tools, problem-solving, and teamwork are essential. Technical foundations in diagnostics, mechanical systems, and electrical knowledge are developed on the job. A current driver’s licence, NCEA Level 2, and good communication skills help you stand out.
