Automation tester Jobs
Automation tester jobs in New Zealand opportunities are growing across banking, open source, and tech services. Teams are modernising digital channels, expanding microservices, and scaling cloud platforms, so dependable automation is a priority. Work spans APIs, web and mobile apps, and customer identity systems, with a clear focus on CI/CD, performance, security, and accessibility. Roles include Auckland-based positions in major banks and remote contracts with global teams.
Day-to-day work
You design and maintain automation suites for web, mobile, and APIs, then analyse results and raise clear defects. Your week includes writing test scripts, reviewing pull requests, and strengthening CI/CD pipelines for faster, safer releases. You collaborate with developers, analysts, and UX to refine acceptance criteria and improve reliability. You also validate data with SQL, tune performance with tools like JMeter, and check security across cloud environments.
Career progression
Careers as an automation tester often progress into senior tester, quality engineer, or test lead roles. Many take ownership of frameworks and strategy across squads or domains. Others specialise in API platforms, mobile automation, performance engineering, or digital identity and security. Contract and consulting paths are common, supporting multiple products and lifting practice maturity.
Skills employers look for
Strong coding for test automation stands out, particularly in Java, JavaScript, or Python. Framework experience matters, including Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, REST Assured, Espresso, or XCUITest. CI/CD and cloud knowledge in AWS or Azure is valued, alongside Docker, Git, and pipeline tools. Employers also look for sharp debugging, clear communication, mentoring ability, and awareness of accessibility and component testing.
