We are looking for a passionate and committed Child and Whānau Support Worker to join our Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT), working with tamariki and whānau in a range of settings including schools, home and the community

This permanent, full-time role (40 hours per week) is based in Taranaki.

You will take a wellbeing approach to support tamariki and their whānau to ensure they can access the right level of support at the right time. Working alongside identified clients, you will seek to improve their sense of belonging, access and ability to succeed in learning and acquire life skills to enhance positive education, social and health outcomes.

Building and maintaining trusted relationships with tamariki and their whānau to help increase capacity, resiliency, and whānau aspiration are critical components of this position.

This role requires travel, so a full, New Zealand drivers’ licence is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support intervention planning with goals for change that build on the strengths and resilience of tamariki and whānau.
  • Work alongside whānau to help them understand and achieve their goals and aspirations.
  • Co-delivery of group programmes to tamariki, rangatahi and parents/caregivers.
  • Develop and maintain supportive, trusting relationships with tamariki and whānau
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with other staff, agencies, professionals, communities, local networks and iwi.
  • Maintain accurate case records and reports, and facilitate hui with tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau
  • Uphold Barnardos’ commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

To excel in this role, you’ll bring:

  • NZEA Level 2 qualification or NZQA Level 2 – 3 (minimum)
  • 2+ years’ experience working with tamariki/rangatahi with complex needs
  • A sound knowledge of the education and psychosocial systems of support and have experience navigating such systems
  • A full, clean NZ driver’s licence is essential
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, cultural safety, and advocacy skills
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, and ability to prioritise and manage competing demands
  • Experienced using a client management system.

Culture

This work can sometimes be challenging. You will need resilience and a passion for working with tamariki and their whānau, be flexible, have a positive attitude, and exhibit the ability to build strong professional relationships with young people, whānau/families, staff, and service providers.  A comprehensive induction programme is undertaken with ongoing education, training, and support offered to all staff.

Embody Our Values

  • Kotahitanga (unity) : Cultivate a sense of belonging through meaningful relationships with tamariki, rangatahi, colleagues, and the wider community
  • Mahi tōtika (excellence) : Demonstrate unwavering integrity and purpose in all aspects of your work, striving for the highest standards of care
  • Kaikōkiritanga (innovation) : Drive positive change with creativity, constantly seeking new and effective ways to support tamariki and rangatahi
  • Āta whakarongo (active listening) : Let tamariki and rangatahi voices shape your approach, ensuring their perspectives are central to decision-making
  • Māiatanga (empowerment) : Nurture growth and unlock potential in tamariki, rangatahi, and colleagues, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development
