Job Title: General Farm Assistant (Sheep and Beef)

Location: Manawatū

Massey University’s Massey Agricultural & Horticultural Enterprises (MAHE) is seeking an experienced General Farm Assistant for a casual position to cover the running of two sheep and beef properties on an as and when required basis.


Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

In the role you will handle day-to-day farming operations with the priority being keeping stock healthy and safe.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage day-to-day livestock operations (sheep and beef cattle).
  • Check and move stock.
  • Monitor animal health, water systems, and pastures.
  • Complete daily farm records and reports.
  • Handle basic maintenance and fencing repairs.


Mō te pāmu | About the farm

Keebles Farm

  • 415ha Sheep, Beef and Dairy support farm.
  • Located on Tennent Drive, close to the Manawatū campus.
  • Part of the Sheep, Beef and Cattle Research Unit (SBCRU), which includes the Dry Stock Unit, Haurongo farm, and Keebles farm.
  • Provides a facility for quality undergraduate teaching, livestock extension, and dry-stock research linked closely with agribusiness.


Tuapaka Farm

  • 471ha Sheep, Beef and Dairy support hill country farm
  • Near Aokautere/Palmerston North (about 11 km from the main campus area).
  • Run across two main blocks consisting of a flat unit and a hill unit.
  • Used extensively for hill country farming research, environmental impact studies (such as nutrient and sediment loss), teaching, and commercial production
  • This hands-on position would suit someone with solid experience who can step in with confidence when required and knows when to escalate issues as appropriate.
  • A competitive remuneration will be offered, based on skills and experience.
