Queenstown | Permanent Position

Work somewhere a little different! Skyline Queenstown is one of New Zealand's most iconic tourism attractions, welcoming visitors from around the world to experience its gondola, luge and other adventure activities.

Behind the scenes is a dedicated engineering team responsible for keeping these attractions operating safely and reliably. We're now looking for an experienced, hands-on Electrical Ropeways Engineer to join the team.

While this position requires a New Zealand-qualified and licensed electrical tradesperson, approximately 70% of the day-to-day work is mechanical, with the remaining 30% electrical.

It's an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys working across both disciplines, solving practical engineering problems and getting involved with a diverse range of equipment and machinery.

The Opportunity Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you'll play an important role in maintaining Skyline's ropeway, chairlift, conveyor and luge systems, alongside associated buildings and infrastructure.

This is a varied, hands-on position where no two days are quite the same. You'll be working across mechanical and electrical systems, carrying out preventative maintenance, fault-finding, inspections and repairs to ensure equipment remains safe, reliable and operational.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing preventative and corrective maintenance across gondola, chairlift, conveyor and luge systems.
  • Diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical faults to minimise downtime.
  • Inspecting, servicing and maintaining machinery and associated equipment.
  • Supporting maintenance and repairs across Skyline's buildings and infrastructure.
  • Working closely with other engineers, contractors and equipment suppliers.
  • Ensuring all work meets relevant safety standards, regulations and operating procedures.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement and overall equipment reliability.

About You We're looking for a practical, mechanically minded electrical tradesperson who enjoys getting their hands dirty and working with a wide variety of equipment.

You'll need to have:

  • A recognised New Zealand electrical trade qualification and current electrical practising licence.
  • Ideally 2–5 years of post-qualification electrical trade experience.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a genuine interest in mechanical maintenance and engineering.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs.
  • Confidence working with machinery, mechanical systems and electrical equipment.
  • A sound understanding of workplace health and safety practices.
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence.
  • The ability to work safely at heights and in outdoor environments.

Previous experience with ropeways, chairlifts, conveyors, industrial machinery, HVAC or similar equipment would be advantageous, but isn't essential.

More importantly, we're looking for someone with the right attitude, good problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn the specialised equipment used within Skyline's operations.

Why Skyline? Skyline is an iconic New Zealand business with a growing international presence, offering the opportunity to work in an engineering environment quite different from a traditional industrial or commercial setting.

You'll be joining an experienced, supportive engineering team, working on specialised equipment that plays a critical role in one of Queenstown's best-known tourism attractions.

There's plenty of variety, opportunities to broaden your mechanical and electrical skills, and the chance to build a long-term career with an established and growing organisation.

And of course, you'll get to live and work in Queenstown, surrounded by some of New Zealand's most spectacular scenery.

Interested? If you're a New Zealand-qualified electrical tradesperson who enjoys mechanical engineering and wants something a little different from the usual maintenance role, we'd love to hear from you.
