Role type : Permanent, Full Time

Salary range & band : General Salary Range D/E: $88,748 - $120,365 depending on skills and experience

About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

Join Fisheries New Zealand's Fisheries Data Management team and play a key role in ensuring high-quality fisheries information is available to support research, policy, compliance and sustainable fisheries management. You'll work at the intersection of data, science, and business, leading complex data analysis and stewardship activities while building strong partnerships with stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage and enhance fisheries research data repositories. For example, processing raw observer data and turning it into structured information
  • Lead complex data requests and information releases
  • Improve data quality, governance, and management practices
  • Partner with scientists and business stakeholders
  • Support system improvements and change initiatives

This role offers a unique opportunity to influence how fisheries information is managed and used to support decision-making across New Zealand's fisheries sector.

About You - Mōu

You are an experienced data professional who enjoys solving complex problems and turning information into meaningful outcomes. You build strong relationships with technical experts and stakeholders and are motivated by delivering high-quality services and continuous improvement.

Our ideal applicant will also bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in information management, data analytics, computer science, statistics, or a related discipline
  • Proven experience managing data quality, data governance, and information management processes
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data concepts into practical business insights
  • Experience working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Experience managing and analysing large and complex datasets
  • New Zealand fisheries knowledge

They will also have practical experience using some or all of the following tools and technologies:

  • Relational Databases, predominantly Postgres
  • SQL for data extraction, validation, and analysis
  • Power BI or similar reporting and visualisation tools
  • Microsoft Excel, including advanced data analysis functions
  • Data management and database systems

About the Team - Mō tō mātou Rōpū

The Fisheries Data Management team is responsible for the stewardship, management, and accessibility of fisheries information that supports Fisheries New Zealand's regulatory, research, and operational functions.

The team works closely with scientists, fisheries managers, researchers, and technology specialists to ensure trusted data is available for informed decision-making. Collaboration, continuous improvement, and knowledge sharing are central to how the team works.

Reporting to the Team Manager - Data Management, you will work alongside four other analysts, all based in Wellington.
