Play a key role in the data development and delivery as part of our Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) project, here at Stats NZ. The IDI is a world first in leading the integration of datasets to link information from key Government agencies, surveys and NGO’s, to translate into better social outcomes for all New Zealanders. We are looking for a hands-on UX/UI Designer to play a pivotal role in a major transformation programme, helping transform our data products and services into scalable, customer centric systems across the project. This role sits within a complex and fast-moving workstream and will suit someone who is confident operating at pace and contributing across multiple activities.

You will lead the design, implementation and analysis of qualitative and quantitative research to help build a clear picture of our end users needs. This is an exciting opportunity for a designer who is passionate about understanding customer needs, solving complex problems and creating a seamless data product and service experience to deliver meaningful business outcomes.

This is an opportunity to establish a research-led customer experience capability that directly translates to how the IDI project better understands their customer journey and experiences.


The scope of this role includes:

  • Use established techniques and tools to develop user stories and elicit user experience requirements.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to prioritise requirements, resolve conflicts, and ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Design intuitive user interactions and experiences using standard design principles and tools.
  • facilitating workshops and co-design sessions with cross-functional teams.
  • Champion best practice design systems, accessibility standards and consistent design patterns to ensure scalable, high-quality data experience.
  • Conduct research, usability testing and journey mapping to uncover customer needs, validate design decisions and drive continuous experience improvements.
  • Promoting design thinking, visualisation and customer-centric iterative development across the project.
  • Partner closely with Product Owner, project team and the wider business to shape decisions across the whole product lifecycle.
  • Influence, lead and design, discussions and helping shape the future experience for customers in our databricks space.
  • Ensure all activities align with the Stats NZ change model, and Stats NZ confidentiality, privacy, security, and data governance requirements.


What you bring | Nōu te rourou

You will have a clear product vision and expertly be able to communicate this, displaying leadership and accountability to bring the following:

  • Proven experience delivering UX/UI and/or service design outcomes across complex products, platforms, or customer-facing experiences, with a portfolio that showcases both strategic thinking and visual creativity.
  • The ability to lead design initiatives, influence stakeholders and navigate ambiguity, balancing user needs, business objectives and delivery requirements in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with experience working closely with cross-functional teams in agile environments and building strong relationships across business and technology functions.
  • The ability to balance customer insights and data, to drive recommendations and decision.
  • Advanced experience with Figma and modern design systems.
  • The ability to review an existing product or service and quickly identify where improvements will have the greatest impact using evidence based practice.
  • Strong knowledge of user journeys, information architecture, interaction design and usability principles
  • Skilled facilitation capability across workshops, discovery sessions and stakeholder discussions.
  • Ability to conduct usability testing, concept validation and experience evaluation.
  • Curiosity about human behaviour and the factors that shape how people engage with our products and services.

Starting salary for this position : $97,270 - $131,601 + kiwisaver
