Job Description

Help keep Wellington healthy, safe and thriving

At Wellington City Council, we're committed to creating a city where people, businesses and communities can flourish. Our Public Health team plays a critical role in protecting public health outcomes across the capital, working with businesses, residents and partner agencies to ensure Wellington remains a safe, healthy and vibrant place to live, work and visit.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Officer to bring technical expertise, leadership and practical problem-solving to a role where your work genuinely makes a difference to our city every day.

Āu ake mahi | What you'll do

This is more than a regulatory role. As a senior member of the Public Health team, you'll help shape how environmental health services are delivered across Wellington, providing guidance and mentoring to Environmental Health Officers and Verifiers while ensuring consistent, high-quality regulatory outcomes.

You'll lead complex investigations and compliance matters, oversee training and quality processes, support continuous improvement initiatives, and work closely with businesses, residents and industry groups to promote public health and regulatory compliance.

The work is varied and interesting, spanning food safety, health licensing, environmental health investigations, customer education, enforcement activities and emergency response preparedness. No two days are the same.

Ngā tohu me ngā wheako | Qualifications and experience

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical knowledge with a collaborative and people-focused approach.

You'll have:

  • A recognised Environmental Health qualification or be working as a Verifier under Food Act 2014.
  • Significant experience working in environmental health, public health regulation, compliance, investigations or enforcement.
  • Strong knowledge of legislation including the Food Act and wider public health regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience mentoring, training or supporting the development of others.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build productive relationships with customers, businesses and stakeholders.
  • Sound judgement, a solutions-focused mindset and the confidence to manage complex or escalated matters.

We are looking to appoint between $98,566 and $115,959 per annum, for this role, depending on relevant skills and experience.

Nōu te rourou | What's in it for you

Working for the Council offers you a range of benefits including 5 weeks annual leave, flexible working options, health and wellbeing support, Council staff discounts and a range of learning and development programmes and opportunities.
