Job Description

Ministerial Advisor (Domain Specialist L1) - Mātanga ā-Mahi

  • Location: Wellington
  • Term: 12 month fixed-term opportunity

Work in a varied, interesting role making complex information clear and supporting transparency and accountability. This 12-month fixed-term opportunity offers varied work across Inland Revenue, close engagement with the Minister of Revenue’s office and insight into high-profile, fast-moving issues.

The Opportunity | Ara Whiwhi Mahi

Inland Revenue’s Ministerial Services team manages Inland Revenue’s Official Information Act requests and provides timely, expert advice and support to Inland Revenue, the Minister of Revenue’s office and its Executive Leadership Team.

As a Ministerial Advisor in this team, you will coordinate, draft and review high-quality responses and advice, and work across Inland Revenue to bring clear, accurate responses together on time. You will join a supportive team of Ministerial Advisors, Senior Advisors and a Principal Advisor who work closely together to deliver strong outcomes.

What you’ll do

You will be a trusted advisor who helps Inland Revenue meet its responsibilities, communicate clearly with the public and support effective engagement with the Minister’s office.

In this role you will:

  • Coordinate, draft and review responses to Official Information Act requests, Parliamentary Questions and other ministerial material
  • Provide practical advice and support to Inland Revenue staff on the Official Information Act and related technical matters
  • Work across Inland Revenue to gather information, test advice and identify emerging issues
  • Build effective relationships with colleagues across Inland Revenue and the Minister of Revenue’s office
  • Manage competing priorities and deliver accurate, well-judged work in a fast-paced environment

About you | Mōu

We are looking for an adaptable, collaborative person with sound judgement, attention to detail and the ability to keep important work moving.

To be successful in this role you will bring:

  • The ability to identify, prioritise and progress important work
  • Strong relationship-management skills and a constructive, collaborative style
  • Excellent organisation and time-management skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex information in plain English
  • Adaptability and composure when working at pace or responding to changing priorities

Experience with the Official Information Act, and the workings of Parliament would be an advantage, but it is not essential. Most importantly, you will be willing to learn and ready to contribute your judgement and perspective as part of a supportive team.

This is a varied role with broad exposure across Inland Revenue. You will have opportunities to strengthen your judgement, writing, influencing and prioritisation skills, while contributing to interesting work and building relationships across Inland Revenue.
