We’re proud to be QLDC. Our people are motivated by a shared purpose driven by care, connection and community. All our roles are at the heart of a dynamic and diverse set of communities where you will be making a genuine difference every day. Join us.

We’re looking for a Senior Contracts Engineer (Roading) to join our Infrastructure Maintenance and Operations team, working with our Property & Infrastructure directorate. This is a full-time, permanent role based out of our Queenstown offices.

What you’ll be doing / He aha te mahi

As a Senior Contracts Engineer, you'll play a key role in ensuring Queenstown Lakes' roading network remains safe, reliable and fit for the future. Working closely with contractors, consultants, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and internal teams, you'll oversee the delivery of maintenance, renewal and operational programmes that keep our transport network performing at its best.

This is a hands-on role that blends contract management, asset management, stakeholder engagement and programme delivery. You'll provide technical and commercial expertise, manage contractor performance, support investment decisions, and help drive continuous improvement across one of the district's most critical infrastructure networks.

The role will involve:

  • Manage the performance of roading maintenance and service contracts, ensuring agreed service levels, KPIs and customer outcomes are achieved.
  • Build strong working relationships with contractors, consultants, NZTA Waka Kotahi, utility operators and other key stakeholders.
  • Monitor network performance, investigate operational issues and identify opportunities to improve service delivery and customer outcomes.
  • Lead contract administration activities, including performance reviews, audits, claims, variations, compliance monitoring and risk management.
  • Support the planning and delivery of renewal, resurfacing and rehabilitation programmes, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on time and within budget.
  • Analyse asset performance and operational data to support evidence-based decision making, future investment planning and asset management improvements.
  • Manage customer enquiries, service requests and complex operational issues while providing high-quality technical advice and support.
  • Contribute to network resilience and emergency response activities, helping coordinate recovery efforts and restore network operations during significant events.

What you’ll bring to the role / Ko wai to Pukeka

You'll be an experienced infrastructure professional who combines strong contract management expertise with a practical, solutions-focused approach. Comfortable working across technical, operational and stakeholder environments, you'll bring sound commercial judgement, excellent relationship management skills and the ability to confidently manage competing priorities while delivering quality outcomes for the community.

To best succeed in this role, you’ll have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 7+ years' experience working within infrastructure, including client, consultant and/or contractor environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing maintenance, operational or service contracts, with a strong understanding of contractor performance management and contract administration.
  • Strong knowledge of road asset management principles, lifecycle planning, and the delivery of maintenance, renewal and capital works programmes.
  • Experience working with NZS3910, NZS3917 or similar contract forms, along with an understanding of NZTA funding, procurement and delivery requirements.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships and effectively resolve operational, contractual and customer issues.
