Hansby QLDC Internship Programme – Building Services, Planning & Development

We’re excited to launch our second year of the Hansby Internship Programme – a unique opportunity for one student to join Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) for a two-week internship. This programme has been made possible through a partnership with Mount Aspiring College and the Hansby family. This internship is designed for Year 12 or Year 13 students and will run from Monday 18th January 2027 to Friday 29th January 2027 on a fixed-term contract.


What you'll be doing / He aha te mahi


The successful candidate will be part of the Planning & Development directorate supporting the Building Services team, with an introduction to the wider organisation throughout their placement. They will be based in our Wanaka branch with the possibility of some work in Queenstown (transport provided).


Our Building Services team is responsible for administering and regulating building work across the district to ensure it complies with the Building Act 2004 and the New Zealand Building Code. They support builders, architects, developers and property owners throughout the building process.


  • Shadow Building Services team members to learn how building consent applications are reviewed and processed.
  • Observe how building inspections help ensure construction projects meet safety and compliance requirements.
  • Learn how Building Services works with builders, architects, developers, and the community to support local growth.
  • Attend team meetings and gain exposure to a range of career pathways within local government and the construction sector.
  • Assist with basic administrative and customer service tasks within a professional office environment.
