At Wellington City Council, we’re working together to create a city that works for everyone. Our Transport & Infrastructure team plays a key role in keeping Pōneke moving, supporting a safe, accessible and well-functioning transport network for all users.

We’re looking for a technically capable and collaborative leader to join our Engineering & Operations team as Team Leader, Traffic & Resolutions. You’ll lead a specialist team responsible for traffic engineering advice and the traffic resolution process, ensuring decisions are well considered, supported by sound engineering evidence, and compliant with Council bylaws and regulatory requirements.

This is an opportunity to combine your transport engineering expertise with people leadership, helping improve network safety, accessibility and operational performance across the city.

Āu ake mahi | What you’ll do

  • Lead, coach and develop the Transport Engineer Assistants and Traffic Resolution Coordinator, building technical capability and supporting their professional growth.
  • Oversee the preparation, review and approval of traffic resolution reports, ensuring they meet legislative and regulatory requirements and are ready for elected member consideration.
  • Provide sound technical advice on traffic engineering, parking, road safety, signage, road markings and transport network changes.
  • Work collaboratively across Council to support transport planning, network operations and improvements for public transport, walking, cycling and other transport modes.
  • Oversee assigned projects and work programmes, ensuring delivery is timely, cost-effective and meets quality expectations.
  • Build effective relationships with internal teams, external stakeholders and the community, responding to customer enquiries and balancing competing needs.
  • Champion continuous improvement, identify opportunities to strengthen processes and service delivery, and contribute to emergency responses affecting the transport network when required.

Ngā tohu me ngā wheako | Qualifications and experience

You’ll be an experienced transport engineering professional who combines strong technical judgement with the ability to lead people, navigate competing priorities and build trusted relationships.

You’ll bring:

  • A tertiary engineering qualification, such as a BE (Civil), NZCE (Civil) or relevant diploma, with at least four years’ relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in transport engineering and transport planning, with a sound understanding of traffic management and road corridor requirements.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, engineering standards and local government processes.
  • Experience reviewing technical reports, assessing transport network changes and providing clear, evidence-based advice.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical teams, stakeholders, customers and elected members.
  • Experience in project management, managing competing priorities and delivering work to agreed timeframes, budgets and quality standards.
  • A collaborative leadership approach, with a commitment to developing others and improving how work gets done.
  • Working knowledge of GIS and asset management tools, along with a current New Zealand driver licence.

Experience in local government would be an advantage.
