About the Role


Quashed.co.nz saves Kiwis from overpaying and the frustrations of insurance. We make it easy to compare and shop for insurance in one place, all online.


We're looking for a Software Engineering Intern to join our small engineering team over the summer. You'll work across the full stack on the product Kiwis actually use: Market Scan, which returns live quotes from 10+ NZ insurers in about 90 seconds, the integrations behind it, and the marketing site that brings people to it. This is real, shipped work, not a side project. Your code will be in production within your first few weeks.


We pride ourselves on shipping software that is not only beautiful but works perfectly. Testing is a big part of the job here, not an afterthought. If you like building things end to end, sweat the small details, and want to learn how a fintech runs from the inside, this is the role for you.



What You'll Work On


  • Build and ship features across our React front ends and Node.js back-end services
  • Help maintain and extend the insurer integrations that power live quoting
  • Improve the marketing site (Gatsby, React) with a focus on performance, SEO and conversion
  • Test your own work thoroughly, write automated tests, and hunt down edge cases before our users find them
  • Review code and take part in how we deploy on AWS
  • Use AI coding tools as part of your day-to-day workflow, and help us get better at using them


Requirements


  • Currently studying computer science, software engineering or a related field, or a recent graduate
  • Solid JavaScript or TypeScript fundamentals, with some exposure to React and Node.js through study, projects or work
  • Comfortable with Git, and curious about how software gets built, tested and deployed for real
  • Super attentive to detail. You notice the off-by-one pixel, the typo, and the edge case nobody else spotted
  • Take testing seriously and care that what you ship actually works, not just that it looks done
  • A self-starter who asks good questions, learns fast and finishes what they start
  • Eligible to work in New Zealand and able to work from our North Shore office over the summer


Nice to Have


  • Experience with AWS, browser automation (e.g. Playwright) or a headless CMS
  • Personal projects or open-source work we can look at
