About the role


Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Counsel to join their Auckland-based Legal, Risk & Compliance team, working across the organisation’s New Zealand and Australian operations.


This is a broad commercial role with a strong focus on drafting and negotiating complex agreements, including debt sale, service and outsourcing arrangements and other key commercial contracts. You will also advise on strategic and operational matters, governance, disputes and litigation, with exposure to regulatory matters as they arise.


Working closely with commercial and operational teams, you will provide practical, solutions-focused advice and play an active role in managing legal risk across the business. You will also supervise and develop a Legal Counsel, offering a great combination of hands-on legal work, autonomy and leadership.


What we’re looking for

  • A senior lawyer with 6–12 years’ PQE, with a strong private practice background. Ideally with exposure to lending or financial services and a current New Zealand legal practising certificate
  • Experience in a regulated commercial environment, ideally with experience in consumer credit, debt collection or financial services regulation and an understanding of the New Zealand and Australian regulatory environments
  • Strong commercial contracting, drafting and negotiation skills, including confidence working with complex commercial arrangements
  • Sound understanding of M&A would be beneficial
  • Strong judgement and ability to translate complex legal issues into clear, practical commercial advice
  • Experience across regulatory advisory, governance, disputes and litigation
  • A collaborative, self-directed approach with the ability to manage a varied workload and competing priorities
  • An interest in using technology to enhance legal service delivery

Our client is an established trans-Tasman business with operations across New Zealand and Australia, with its legal team playing an important role in supporting both day-to-day operations and broader strategic and regulatory matters.
