Job Description

BestStart Parkside is seeking a passionate and dedicated Qualified and Registered Teacher to join our energetic and close-knit team as our new Head Teacher in our Preschool room.


About the Role


This is a leadership position within our preschool (2–6 years), where you will lead by example through your own teaching practice and guide your team to deliver a well-balanced curriculum responsive to the holistic needs of our tamariki.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Providing leadership and mentoring within the teaching team
  • Supporting a collaborative team culture through effective coaching conversations
  • Driving internal evaluation and teaching inquiry for continuous improvement
  • Building strong, responsive relationships with tamariki, whānau, and the wider community
  • Maintaining organised systems that support a flexible, calm, and responsive learning environment


This is a permanent position working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.


About Us


BestStart Parkside is located on Hagley Avenue, directly across from Hagley Park and close to Christchurch Hospital. We cater for up to 50 children across two rooms – a nursery and a preschool – within a warm, inclusive, open learning environment.


Our centre is well-established and thriving, with many of our whānau living locally or working nearby, including at the hospital. We have a stable, supportive team that includes a centre cook and experienced, long-serving qualified teachers. We pride ourselves on our positive team culture and collaborative approach to shared responsibilities and centre priorities.

Role Requirements


We are looking for a natural leader who shares our values and vision, with a strong understanding of programme planning and assessment, and a genuine passion for growth and development.


You will also have:


  • BEd/Dip Teaching Level 7 (ECE) and current Teacher Certification
  • Strong knowledge of programme planning, pedagogy, and curriculum
  • Sound understanding of ECE Regulations and Te Whāriki, with a commitment to compliance
  • A passion for delivering high-quality teaching and learning experiences
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
