Job Description

A bit about us

Ashburton District Council is an innovative, community-focused organisation serving one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing districts. We’re committed to delivering outstanding services, infrastructure, and projects that make a meaningful difference to the people who live, work, and visit our district. With a collaborative culture, modern facilities, and a genuine investment in our people, you’ll have the opportunity to grow your career while contributing to initiatives that help shape the future of Mid Canterbury.

About the role

Working as part of our GIS team and collaborating across the organisation, you’ll play a key role in developing, delivering, and enhancing GIS services and spatial technologies that support Ashburton District Council’s operations and strategic objectives.

You’ll work closely with stakeholders to understand business needs and deliver innovative, practical GIS solutions that improve decision-making, strengthen our information systems, and create value across the organisation.

You’ll also help champion the use of GIS by building spatial capability, promoting best practice, and driving initiatives that support organisational growth and community outcomes.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), permanent position based in Ashburton, Mid-Canterbury.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for an experienced GIS professional who is passionate about using spatial technology to solve problems, improve services, and deliver meaningful outcomes.

You’ll bring strong experience working with ESRI solutions and enjoy collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders to develop innovative, practical GIS solutions that align with business needs and industry best practice.

Ideally, you’ll have:

  • A tertiary qualification in GIS, Geospatial Science, Geography, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Strong practical experience delivering GIS solutions, including experience working in a senior or technical leadership capacity.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with the ESRI ArcGIS product suite.
  • Experience with Eagle Technology Local Maps, or the ability to quickly learn new platforms and technologies.

Just as importantly, you’ll be a collaborative and proactive team player with excellent communication skills and a passion for continuous improvement. You’ll enjoy building relationships, sharing knowledge, and helping others unlock the value of spatial data.

You’ll take pride in delivering high-quality work, applying critical thinking and attention to detail to solve complex challenges. Like us, you’ll be committed to providing exceptional service and finding practical solutions that make a difference for our organisation and community.

What we can offer you

This position is guaranteed to provide you with a variety of work, based within a supportive team who are dedicated to the success of our organisation. Your career will grow through on the job and external training opportunities, plus our new building will provide a work environment that will be the envy of most.

We understand that moving to a new city is a big decision. To support you every step of the way, we provide relocation assistance, short-term accomodation assistance, and personalised support throughout your transition, helping you feel at home both at work and in the community.

Benefits of being part of our team include:

  • Professional development opportunities
  • Flexible work options
  • Health benefits
  • Birthday leave and the ability to purchase additional leave.
  • Brand new Library and Civic Centre building in the heart of the CBD
  • Sociable & family friendly work environment
