The Employer & Operations


Flame Tree Developments (Fiji) Pte Ltd is one of Fiji's larger privately owned infrastructure contractors. They are vertically integrated: "we own the rock, crush it, cart it, lay it and seal it ourselves, right down to the bitumen."


  • There are six operating arms employing some 209 staff across the following areas: quarrying; roading and sealing; civil contracting; bitumen supply; surveying; landscaping and nursery
  • 26 staff are employed in the plant maintenance division, including the Senior Plant Manager, this role, Technicians, Welders, Panel Beater/Refinisher, Auto Electrician, Fleet Administrator and Apprentices


The Workshop Operations and Fleet


The workshop operations are located in Nadi. There are satellite maintenance crews at Saru, Waimanu, and Sabeto quarries. The fleet consists of 180 items on the plant register, 141 of them powered. This includes 30 Hitachi excavators from 4.8 to 45 tonne, a range of crushing and screening plant, Kenworth prime movers, dump trucks, Hiab trucks, and sealing plant.


The fleet includes Japanese and European earthmoving gear, Metso crushing plant, Wirtgen stabilisation gear, American and Japanese trucks, and static plant and generators.


The Role and Its Duties


This is a planned succession role - once competencies are proven, it leads to the overall company Plant Manager position.


  • Hands-on: leading your team of 26 from the floor, not a back office, you will need to have advanced mechanical repair skills across civil construction equipment, quarrying, and transport fleets. There are multiple aspects of management involved in this role, but you will also be leading the technical team, advising on best repair solutions, and physically carrying out mechanical repairs where necessary.
  • Able to lead and develop local tradesmen: the team is capable but needs technical leadership and structure. Lifting the standard of the people around them is a big part of this job.
  • Initiative: a leader - someone who does not wait to be told. The ability to understand that plant availability drives production, and production drives the contract. Experience inside civil construction, quarrying or heavy fleet operations is essential - a franchise workshop background alone will not cut it.


The Skills and Attributes Sought


  • Qualifications : a heavy diesel / plant mechanic trade qualification is essential
  • Technical skills : across civil construction, quarrying fleet plant, trucks, and ancillary plant
  • Excellent people management skills : this is a planned succession role to a more senior position
  • Down to earth personality and commitment : this is a civil construction environment, not a franchise workshop. We are seeking a long-term commitment to the role not a short-term contract. This will suit either a single or married person, but long-term relocation is essential
  • Sense of urgency and organisational skills : repairs are time critical
  • Career development: desire to move into a more senior role and work with the Senior Plant Manager to achieve a seamless changeover as it occurs
