Civil Machine Operators

Location: Queenstown

Pay Rate: $32 – $42 per hour + 8% holiday pay

Hours: Full-time, minimum 30 guaranteed hours per week

Employment Type: Fixed Term

Remarkable People are seeking experienced and reliable Civil Machine Operators to join busy civil construction and infrastructure projects across Queenstown and Central Otago.

We are looking for skilled operators with proven experience operating heavy machinery in civil construction, earthworks, roading and site development.

Successful candidates will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating machinery to complete earthmoving, excavation, grading, compaction and general civil construction tasks.

Machinery and Key Responsibilities

Depending on the position and project requirements, successful candidates will be expected to operate one or more of the following machines:

• Excavators: Operating excavators to carry out trenching, bulk excavation, drainage preparation, earthmoving and site levelling.
• Rollers: Operating smooth drum, padfoot or other compaction rollers to compact soil, aggregate and road surfaces to project specifications.
• Graders: Operating graders to prepare, shape and level surfaces for road construction, earthworks and infrastructure projects.
• Loaders: Operating wheel loaders to load, move and stockpile soil, gravel, aggregate and other construction materials.
• Bulldozers: Operating bulldozers to clear, push, spread and level materials during earthworks and site preparation.

Additional responsibilities include:

• Conducting daily pre-start inspections and routine machinery checks.
• Operating machinery safely and efficiently in accordance with site procedures and manufacturer guidelines.
• Reading and following site plans, instructions and project specifications.
• Carrying out earthworks, excavation, grading and compaction to required standards.
• Identifying and reporting mechanical faults, damage or maintenance requirements.
• Working alongside site supervisors, ground crews and other machine operators to complete projects.
• Maintaining safe working distances from personnel, underground services and other machinery.
• Following all workplace health and safety procedures.
• Assisting with general civil construction duties when required.

Minimum Skills and Experience Required

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Minimum 1 year of proven experience operating relevant heavy machinery in civil construction, earthworks or infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated practical experience operating at least one of the machinery types listed above.
• Relevant WTR endorsements where required for the machinery and work being undertaken.
• A valid NZ driver's licence appropriate to the role.
• Ability to operate machinery safely and competently in an active construction environment.
• Knowledge of machinery pre-start inspections, basic maintenance and safe operating procedures.
• Ability to follow site plans, instructions and health and safety requirements.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
• Physically capable of completing the duties associated with the position.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• Satisfactory criminal history check.
• Relevant machinery operating qualifications, civil construction certifications or additional endorsements will be advantageous.
