Mō te tūnga | About the role

As a Chemical Diversion Investigation Officer, you will play a vital role in supporting the disruption of illicit drug manufacturing and the illegal diversion of precursor chemicals throughout New Zealand. Working alongside the National Clan Lab Team within the National Organised Crime Group (NOCG), you will help identify risks within legitimate supply chains, gather and analyse intelligence, build partnerships with industry stakeholders, and contribute to investigations targeting organised criminal activity. This is a unique opportunity to combine investigative thinking, relationship management, and intelligence gathering to make a meaningful contribution to community safety.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Support investigations relating to clandestine laboratories, precursor chemicals, and the manufacture of illicit drugs and homemade explosives.
  • Identify and analyse opportunities to trace the source of chemicals, equipment, and materials used in illegal drug production.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with industry suppliers and stakeholders to promote education, prevention, and intelligence sharing.
  • Gather, assess, and disseminate intelligence to support operational and investigative outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external partners including intelligence teams, government agencies, and industry representatives.
  • Assist in the preparation of production orders, search warrants, and investigative documentation.
  • Attend search warrants and investigative activities to gather intelligence and support operational objectives.
  • Deliver training and awareness initiatives relating to chemical diversion and clandestine laboratory risks.
  • Ensure information is accurately recorded, managed, and shared in accordance with legislation, policy, and organisational requirements.

Whakaritenga motuhake | Special requirements

  • Travel requirements: Where applicable throughout New Zealand and internationally if required
  • Must hold full NZ drivers’ license
  • Must hold or be able to attain a First Aid certificate
  • Must be an Authorised Officer or be able to obtain the status of an Authorised Officer.
  • Drug and Alcohol testing, as required, according to guidelines
  • (Note: No National Security clearance is required for this role)

Utu ā-tau | Salary

This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $88,179 and $92,267 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
