About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

Your procurement skills will contribute to outcomes that matter for Aotearoa New Zealand. You'll join a high-performing, supportive team within a large, purpose-driven organisation, working at the heart of the nationally significant Plant Health and Environment Capability (PHEC) programme, an ambitious investment in modern and resilient science infrastructure that will help safeguard New Zealand's primary industries, environment, and economy for generations to come. With opportunities at both Procurement Specialist and Senior Procurement Specialist level, these roles offer varied work, broad stakeholder engagement, and the chance to deliver procurement outcomes that support MPI's purpose.

Procurement Specialist

As a Procurement Specialist, you'll bring practical procurement and contract management experience and be ready to pick up work across a range of portfolios. You won't be new to procurement and will have the confidence to hit the ground running, while continuing to develop your technical expertise through exposure to diverse and increasingly complex work. This is an opportunity to build breadth across end-to-end procurement within a supportive environment that encourages learning and development.

You will be responsible for:

  • Developing fit-for-purpose procurement strategies.
  • Delivering end-to-end procurement from planning through to negotiation and contract execution.
  • Providing practical procurement and contract management advice and support.
  • Building your technical capability through varied procurement work.

Senior Procurement Specialist

As a Senior Procurement Specialist, you'll bring significant depth in strategic procurement and operate as a senior practitioner within the team. You will provide internal leadership through mentoring, peer review, and quality assurance. You'll independently lead complex end-to-end procurement, with one of the roles having a particular focus on ICT. You don't need to be an ICT specialist, but you'll need a strong foundation in ICT procurement and the strategic capability to confidently lead complex pieces of work. As there are multiple roles, feel free to apply even if you do not have an ICT focus.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading complex end-to-end strategic procurement initiatives.
  • Leading and providing strategic advice on complex ICT procurement.
  • Applying innovative and strategic thinking to challenging procurement requirements.
  • Supporting managers through document reviews, peer review and quality assurance.
  • Mentoring colleagues and helping strengthen procurement capability across the team.
  • Providing senior-level leadership while remaining hands-on in procurement delivery.

About You - Mōu

You're an experienced procurement professional who enjoys working collaboratively, building strong stakeholder relationships and contributing to meaningful outcomes. You'll bring practical procurement capability and the confidence to manage tender and negotiation activities, while continuing to develop your expertise within a supportive team. You'll be motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the PHEC programme, an important asset for New Zealand, and to work for an organisation creating positive, forward-thinking change.

You will bring:

  • Experience running tenders and managing procurement processes.
  • Strong negotiation skills and confidence working with stakeholders.
  • Relevant procurement and contract management knowledge and skills.
  • CIPS Level 4 or above, or progress towards this qualification.
  • Exposure to project management would be advantageous.

You do not need to meet all of the role requirements to apply. We offer a breadth of development and learning opportunities and will welcome an application if you think you could make a great fit.
