Job Description

We are looking for a passionate and committed Whānau Support Worker to join our team working with the Turanganui-A-Kiwi Activity Centre (TAKAC).

This is a permanent, part time (30 hours per week) role only during school term time, based in Gisborne.

This role supports the learning, wellbeing and development of young people whose circumstances place them at risk. You will work alongside rangatahi to improve their sense of belonging and learning, build resilience and help them acquire life skills that enhance education, social and health outcomes.

Building trusted relationships with rangatahi and whānau is at the heart of this role. You will collaborate with TAKAC staff as well as Barnardos colleagues to ensure the best outcomes for young people.

This role requires travel, so a full, New Zealand drivers’ licence is essential. While the successful candidate will predominately work at TAKAC, they will be required to attend meetings/hui and planning sessions at the Barnardos Office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support rangatahi to achieve their goals and aspirations
  • Always ensure the wellbeing and safety of rangatahi
  • Encourage learning opportunities and participation in activities
  • Provide safe transportation to and from the centre and appointments
  • Maintain accurate case records and reports, and facilitate hui with rangatahi and their whanau
  • Build strong, high trust, reciprocal relationships with rangatahi, whānau, TAKAC staff and other community networks
  • Uphold Barnardos’ commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Ngā Pou e Whā

To excel in this role, you’ll bring:

  • NZQA Level 2 qualification minimum (essential)
  • 2+ years’ experience working with rangatahi with complex needs (essential)
  • Experience working with rangatahi and whānau from rural or remote settings (desirable)
  • Full, clean NZ driver’s licence (essential)
  • Current first aid certificate (desirable)
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (essential)
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills

Culture

This work can sometimes be challenging. You will need resilience and a passion for working with youth, be flexible, have a positive attitude, and exhibit the ability to build strong professional relationships with young people, whanau/families, staff, and service providers.  A comprehensive induction programme is undertaken with ongoing education, training, and support offered to all staff.

  • Kaikōkiritanga (Innovation) : Drive positive change with creativity, constantly seeking new and effective ways to support tamariki and rangatahi
