We’re looking for an Infrastructure Development Engineer to join our Property & Infrastructure directorate in a full-time permanent role based in our Queenstown offices.

What you’ll be doing / He aha te mahi


This role plays a key part in ensuring QLDC’s three waters, transport, and open spaces infrastructure is effectively planned, assessed, and optimised to meet current and future development needs. You’ll provide technical advice and coordinate responses to developers, planners, and engineers, helping to shape infrastructure outcomes across the district. Working closely with internal teams, you’ll investigate issues, apply practical engineering solutions, and support robust decision-making through modelling and analysis. You’ll also ensure a consistent, customer-focused approach while enabling cost recovery from development activities.


The role will involve:


  • Respond to developer, planning, and resource management engineering enquiries within required timeframes
  • Provide technical advice on subdivision and development standards, including contributions to NZS4404 and QLDC Code of Practice
  • Investigate infrastructure queries and develop practical, cost-effective solutions
  • Support decision-making through the use of hydraulic and other infrastructure modelling
  • Assess infrastructure capacity and level of service, identifying improvement options
  • Coordinate development-related requests across teams and manage developer interactions to ensure aligned, efficient outcomes

You are motivated, innovative, and take pride in delivering high-quality, timely outcomes.


To best succeed in this role, you’ll have:


  • Bachelor of Engineering (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in infrastructure roles (consultancy, client-side, or local government)
  • Proven experience working with three waters infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of hydraulic modelling and its application
  • Demonstrated stakeholder engagement skills, particularly working with developers
  • Excellent communication skills with a customer-focused approach and a drive to deliver results
