Job Description

We are seeking reliable and hardworking Deckhands to join our Stewart Island team.


About the role

As a Deckhand on our vessels, you will play a vital role in the successful operation of the vessel and the cultivation of mussels. Your efforts contribute directly to the productivity and profitability of mussel farming. You will carry out a variety of tasks withing the manufacturing function. This role is based in Stewart Island, working Sunday to Thursday.

Accommodation may be provided during your rostered time on the island. Free transport is available on a company vessel between Bluff and Stewart Island. Any alternative travel arrangements to and from the island will be at your own  expense.


Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out pre-start and safety checks with the Skipper and crew before each trip.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings and follow all safety procedures.
  • Harvest mussels in line with operational requirements and quality standards.
  • Operate harvesting equipment safely and effectively.
  • Maintain farm infrastructure, including stripping, scraping, repairing, and tightening lines.
  • Prepare lines for seeding and ensure floats are maintained.
  • Complete seeding activities to the required specifications and timelines.
  • Report and follow up on any safety or operational issues.


What You Need to Succeed

  • Experience working on vessels.
  • Physically fit and capable of heavy lifting.
  • Mussel barge and mechanical experience preferred but not essential.
  • Strong commitment to health and safety.
  • Good communication skills and a strong work ethic.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • A team player with a positive attitude.
