Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join a well-established Dunedin mechanical engineering company providing specialist engineering, maintenance and mechanical services across a range of industrial environments.


This is a hands-on position suited to an experienced fitter who is confident working with industrial machinery, mechanical plant, hydraulics and pneumatics and who enjoys fault finding, maintenance, repairs, installation and equipment overhauls.


Your Main Responsibilities:

  • Carry out mechanical fitting, maintenance, servicing and repairs on industrial plant and machinery.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and complete breakdown repairs.
  • Undertake preventative and scheduled maintenance.
  • Dismantle, inspect, repair, overhaul and reassemble mechanical equipment.
  • Work with bearings, shafts, couplings, pumps, motors, gearboxes and other mechanical components.
  • Carry out machinery and equipment installation and commissioning.
  • Complete equipment alignment, adjustment and testing.
  • Maintain and repair hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and systems.
  • Assist with plant shutdowns, equipment upgrades and major maintenance projects.
  • Measure, mark out, fit and assemble mechanical components.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, plans and technical specifications.
  • Use hand tools, power tools and precision measuring equipment.
  • Identify worn or damaged components and determine appropriate repair or replacement requirements.
  • Carry out workshop and onsite mechanical engineering work.
  • Work on a variety of industrial, processing and heavy engineering equipment.
  • Liaise effectively with other tradespeople, engineers, clients and site personnel.
  • Complete all work safely and to a high standard.


Skills & Experience


The successful applicant will ideally have:


  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter, Maintenance Fitter,  Mechanical Maintenance Technician or similar.
  • Strong hands-on mechanical maintenance and fitting experience.
  • Experience working with industrial plant, machinery and rotating equipment.
  • Experience with bearings, shafts, couplings, pumps, motors and gearboxes.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance and breakdown repairs.
  • Ability to dismantle, overhaul and rebuild mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Competence using mechanical fitting and precision measuring equipment.
  • Welding and fabrication experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Relevant mechanical fitting, maintenance or mechanical engineering qualification preferred.
  • Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Full NZ driver's licence preferred.
