Manawatū Campus | Palmerston North


We are seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to join the University’s Institute of Education –

Te Kura o Te Mātauranga within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

This position offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced and collegial academic and/or practitioner to contribute to teaching, research, supervision, and professional practice within Educational and Developmental Psychology and related fields in Aotearoa. We welcome applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Educational and Developmental Psychology
  • Assessment and Learning
  • Inclusive Education and Learning Support
  • Applied Professional Ethics and Qualitative Research Methods
  • Literacy Education
  • Indigenous/Māori/Pasifika Education
  • Indigenous/Māori/Pasifika Psychology


The successful applicant will contribute to the continued development of educational and

accredited programmes, support student success, engage in research and scholarship, and foster strong relationships with professional, community, and educational stakeholders and contribute to fulfilling Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations.

This is a full-time, ongoing Lecturer or Senior Lecturer appointment based at our Manawatū (Palmerston North) campus.


Salary will be commensurate with skills, experience, and academic achievement, with

appointment made at either Lecturer (NZ$86,113 - $109,901) or Senior Lecturer (NZ$107,916 - $152,711) level.


Reporting to the Head of the Institute of Education Te Kura o Te Mātauranga and Director of

Accredited Programmes in association with the Kaihautū Māori, you will contribute to

learning and teaching, professional practice, student supervision, research and scholarship, and service within the Institute and wider University community.


This position will play a key role within our Educational and Developmental Psychology

programmes, contributing to the education and development of future psychologists and

professionals working within educational settings.


Key responsibilities and opportunities include:

  • Teaching and contributing to the Master of Educational and Developmental
  • Psychology (MEdDevPsych) and Postgraduate Diploma in Educational and
  • Developmental Psychology (PGDipEdDevPsych) programmes.
  • Supporting student learning and development across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, aligned with your areas of expertise and interest.
  • Contributing to an industry-accredited pathway that leads to registration with the New
  • Zealand Psychologists Board.
  • Working within a bicultural programme that prioritises culturally responsive practice and supports positive outcomes for Māori learners and communities.
  • Helping develop graduates who can effectively apply educational, developmental and psychological knowledge to support lifelong learning and wellbeing.
  • Contributing to research and scholarship that informs professional practice and advances the discipline.
  • Supporting students to critically analyse and respond to contemporary educational, developmental and psychological issues, policies and practices.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to ensure graduates are well equipped to make
  • meaningful contributions within educational, community and professional settings.


The Educational and Developmental Psychology pathway:

  • Includes the MEdDevPsych and PGDipEdDevPsych qualifications.
  • Is accredited by the New Zealand Psychologists Board, providing a pathway to
  • psychologist registration.
  • Has a strong bicultural focus, recognising the importance of ensuring Māori learners
  • have access to psychologists who understand and respond to their cultural contexts
  • and aspirations.
  • Equips graduates with the knowledge, skills and research capability to support the
  • learning and development of diverse individuals and communities.
  • Prepares graduates to critically apply evidence-based practice to address complex
  • educational, developmental and psychological challenges in today's world.


The Institute of Education offers a suite of respected programmes for initial teacher education, specialist teachers, counsellors, educational and developmental psychologists, speech language therapists, and professional learning and researcher development for experienced educators, leaders, and practitioners.

The position requires:

  • An academic who is committed to upholding Te Tiriti.
  • A doctoral qualification with a developing academic and/or professional record.
  • A respected professional and educator with a strong reputation in your field.
  • Experience in educational and developmental psychology practice and/or specialist
  • education settings.
  • Evidence of effective teaching, supervision, and student support.
  • Experience or potential in research, scholarship, and publication.
  • An experienced networker and relationship builder with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Current registration, or eligibility for registration, with the New Zealand Psychologists Board is desirable but not required.
