The School of Veterinary Science are seeking applications for a Farm Animal Veterinary Technician to join our Farm Services Clinic team, at Massey University’s Manawatū campus in Palmerston North. This opportunity is offered on a fixed-term basis to provide parental leave cover for up to 12 months.

The Farm Services Clinic provides veterinary services to both Massey-owned and commercial farms, with a focus on dairy cattle, alongside sheep, beef and lifestyle block animals. Our primary goal is to deliver outstanding clinical care while creating exceptional hands-on learning opportunities for veterinary students, both on-farm and in our modern Farm Animal Hospital.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

This is a hands-on role supporting the delivery of high-quality farm animal veterinary services and veterinary education. Working alongside veterinarians, students, and clients, you will provide technical and nursing support, assist with the operation of the Farm Animal Hospital and Isolation Unit, and contribute to the practical training of veterinary students.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical support to veterinarians, including triaging cases and performing routine herd health and animal procedures.
  • Delivering farm animal nursing care both on-farm and within the hospital environment.
  • Supporting the day-to-day operation of the Farm Animal Hospital and
  • Farm Animal Isolation Unit.
  • Assisting with client enquiries, bookings, estimates, and general clinic administration.
  • Maintaining accurate records, clinic inventory, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Supporting veterinary student learning through practical training and demonstration of best-practice techniques.
  • Participating in an after-hours roster during busy seasons, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and maintaining high standards of health, safety, and animal care.
  • This role offers a unique opportunity to combine animal care, client service, and student support within a dynamic farm animal clinical environment.


Mōu | About you

We are looking for someone who has:

  • A qualification in Veterinary Technology, Rural Animal Technology or
  • Veterinary Nursing.
  • Proven experience working with farm animals and confidence in safely handling livestock.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform routine herd health and animal
  • management procedures.
  • A strong understanding of animal welfare and safe animal handling practices.
  • A full, clean driver's licence.
  • Experience towing and manoeuvring trailers, with confidence operating in rural environments.
