About the role


Our Counsellors provide a free, confidential phone and online chat counselling service for children and young people aged 5 - 19 years.


This support really makes a difference, and while the role can be challenging at times, it can be extremely rewarding at others.

It's a vital part of our work to make New Zealand a better, safer, happier place for children and young people.


  • 0800 What's Up is open 7 days a week, 11am - 11pm.
  • Candidates must be able to work weekends and some evenings until 11pm.
  • 2 casual positions available (As and when required).
  • Training is provided to the successful candidates


Please note, while this role is mostly remote, you will occasionally need to attend shifts or meetings at the Auckland regional hub, based in Mangere


Skills and experience


Our counsellors are given full training, but experience or qualification in the following areas are desirable:

  • 2+ years previous counselling experience or experience working with vulnerable children or young people (essential).
  • Recognised tertiary qualification in the Social Services field e.g. counselling, social work, psychology (essential).
  • Ability to operate and multitask the call centre technology, including computer, instant messaging and phone systems
  • Ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of counselling theories and appropriate background knowledge


To excel in this role, you will need:


  • To value diversity and encourage it in others.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially with young people.
  • To be technologically savvy so you can pick up our operating systems quickly.
  • Resilience and a clear understanding of your own self-care needs and when to practice them.
  • The ability to work shifts including nights and weekends.
  • Have a current full NZ Driver's Licence (desirable, due to the need to occasionally be at our Mangere office).
