Job Description

Design Analyst (Population Estimates, Projections & Coverage) | Kaitāritari Hoahoa

As a Design Analyst in the Population Estimates, Projections and Coverage team, you will research, design, and implement innovative statistical, data, and analytical solutions that support the development and delivery of New Zealand's official population estimates and projections, while strengthening our understanding of population and dwelling coverage. You will lead significant analytical and methodological work using census, survey, and administrative data, developing new methods, tools, standards, and approaches that enhance the quality and impact of our products and services. Contributing to major statistical releases, you'll help solve complex analytical and methodological challenges, provide specialist advice in your area of expertise, and play a key role in maintaining high-quality statistical outputs that inform decision-making across Aotearoa. You'll take ownership of delivering quality outputs to agreed timeframes while applying sound judgement to complex statistical and methodological questions.

Population Estimates, Projections and Coverage Unit

The Population Estimates, Projections and Coverage team develops New Zealand's official population estimates and projections and leads work to understand population and dwelling coverage across census, survey, and administrative data sources. Our work supports decision-making across government and helps New Zealand better understand demographic change.

We're looking for an experienced analyst who enjoys tackling complex methodological and analytical challenges. This is not an entry-level position. You'll bring at least 2 years of work experience in analytics, statistics, research, or a related field. You'll be comfortable working with complex data, applying critical thinking to ambiguous problems, and communicating technical concepts clearly to a range of audiences.

This role would particularly suit someone looking to take the next step in their analytical career. You'll work alongside some of New Zealand's leading experts in population statistics, demographic methods, and statistical modelling, providing a unique opportunity to strengthen your methodological and analytical capability. Whether you're looking to broaden your experience, deepen your technical expertise, or build skills that you can take back to your organisation, this role offers the chance to work on high-profile and nationally significant pieces of work while continuing to grow professionally.

Location: You must be based in Pōneke (Wellington) or Ōtautahi (Christchurch)

This is a fixed-term or secondment position until November 2027
