Retail Manager – Freshlink Grocer

Wānaka | Permanent, full-time


Freshlink is an independent grocery business based in Wānaka, connecting customers with quality whole foods, local growers, producers and artisans. As the business continues to grow, we are looking for a capable and hands-on Retail Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day performance of our retail operation.


This is a practical management role suited to someone who is comfortable leading a team while remaining closely involved in the store. You will work with the owner and wider Freshlink team to maintain strong retail standards, improve systems, manage stock and margins, and ensure customers continue to receive the level of service for which Freshlink is known.


Key responsibilities include:

• Leading the day-to-day operation of the retail store and maintaining high standards of presentation, service and efficiency.

• Managing and supporting retail staff, including rostering, induction, training, performance feedback and day-to-day supervision.

• Reviewing the product range and stock requirements to ensure appropriate availability, stock rotation and service levels.

• Working closely with the supply and procurement functions on ordering, supplier relationships, stock movement and purchasing decisions.

• Monitoring product costs, margins and retail pricing, and making appropriate pricing recommendations or adjustments.

• Reviewing sales, stock and other operational information to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.

• Contributing to store budgets, controlling operational expenditure and monitoring performance against business targets.

• Coordinating promotions, merchandising and marketing activity to support sales and customer engagement.

• Maintaining accurate stock, sales and transaction records using Freshlink's retail systems.

• Supporting customers with product enquiries and ensuring a consistently high standard of customer service.

• Maintaining effective store procedures and applying Lean and continuous-improvement principles across the operation.

• Ensuring the store meets its food-safety, workplace health and safety and other regulatory obligations.

• Working collaboratively with Freshlink's supply, procurement and management teams to improve the overall performance of the business.


What we are looking for

Applicants must have:

• At least 2 years' relevant experience in retail, grocery retail, retail operations, stock/supply coordination or a comparable environment.

• Demonstrated experience supervising, supporting or training staff.

• Practical experience with stock control, purchasing or procurement processes.

• An understanding of retail pricing, margins and stock management.

• Confidence working with POS, inventory and general business systems.

• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy retail environment.

• Good communication and customer-service skills.

Experience in grocery or food retail, familiarity with Revel POS, and an interest in whole foods and local growers/producers would be advantageous but are not essential.

• Location: Freshlink Grocer, 82 Anderson Road, Wānaka 9305

• Employment: Permanent, full-time

• Pay: NZD $36.00 per hour

• Minimum guaranteed hours: 30 hours per week

• Hours: minimum 30 hours per week, rostered across Freshlink's seven-day operation

• All hours worked will be paid at the applicable hourly rate.
