  • Experienced, commercially driven field sales professional
  • Work with major retailers, dealerships and automotive grooming customers
  • Grow existing accounts and develop new business nationwide

About the Role

GPI Automotive (NZ) Ltd, part of The Smits Group Ltd, is looking for an experienced, energetic and commercially driven National Field Sales Representative to join our team.

This is a hands-on, customer-facing role with a strong focus on visiting customers, growing sales and supporting our products at store level. You will spend significant time on the road working directly with major retail customers, individual stores, dealerships and automotive grooming operations across New Zealand.

This isn't simply about managing accounts from Head Office. You'll be expected to get in front of customers, identify opportunities, improve product presentation, support merchandising, train staff and actively promote our automotive aftermarket and car grooming ranges.

Success will come from being visible in the market, building strong relationships and turning product knowledge into increased sales and profitable growth.

About Us

The Smits Group is an Auckland-based leading supplier to the automotive refinish and aftermarket industries. Our wholesale division, GPI Automotive (NZ) Ltd, represents and distributes well-known brands including Meguiar's, Rislone, Peak, Sagola, Little Trees, Lyndar and Roberlo.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and grow major retail accounts through regular face-to-face visits across New Zealand.
  • Build strong relationships with retail buyers, store managers, frontline staff and other key customers.
  • Identify sales opportunities, monitor stock availability and ensure products are correctly displayed and promoted.
  • Drive merchandising standards, promotional displays, product placement and ranging compliance.
  • Train store and customer staff on product features, applications and selling techniques.
  • Support new product launches, promotions, range reviews and seasonal initiatives.
  • Develop new business with retailers, dealerships, automotive workshops and grooming/detailing operations.
  • Promote and demonstrate car grooming, detailing and associated products to customers.
  • Identify cross-selling opportunities and opportunities to expand existing product ranges.
  • Monitor competitor activity, market trends and customer feedback.
  • Attend customer meetings, trade shows, demonstrations and industry events.
  • Work closely with the wider team to resolve customer requirements and maintain accurate sales and visit records.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Proven field sales experience with a strong record of achieving sales and growth targets.
  • Experience within the NZ automotive and retail sectors, particularly major retailers and multi-store networks, is highly desirable.
  • Confidence working directly with store managers, frontline staff and key decision-makers.
  • Ability to deliver product training, demonstrations and sales support.
  • A proven ability to grow existing accounts and win new business.
  • Automotive aftermarket, car grooming or detailing experience would be an advantage, although strong sales experience will also be considered.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, presentation and negotiation skills.
  • A highly organised, self-motivated approach with the ability to manage a national territory independently.
  • A full NZ driver licence and willingness to travel extensively throughout New Zealand.

The Right Person

We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys being out in the field and selling. You'll be energetic, personable and confident walking into a store, dealership or grooming operation and creating a sales opportunity.

You'll take pride in building relationships, training staff, improving merchandising and driving results.
