Job Description

Bring finance and technology together to make a city work better.

Behind every great city is a team making sure the systems that support it are efficient, reliable, and ready for the future.

At Wellington City Council (WCC), we're looking for an experienced Senior Systems Accountant to lead the evolution of our finance technology environment and help us unlock new ways of working through smarter systems, automation, and digital innovation.

This is more than a traditional systems accounting role. You'll be a trusted technical specialist, partnering with finance professionals, technology experts, and business leaders to deliver system improvements that strengthen controls, streamline processes, improve reporting, and create better experiences for users across the organisation.

Āu ake mahi | What you'll do

As WCC continues to invest in modern, connected ways of working, you'll play a key role in shaping the future of our finance systems and leveraging technology to deliver smarter, more efficient outcomes for the city.

  • Lead the ongoing development and optimisation of TechnologyOne (OneCouncil).
  • Drive system upgrades, enhancements, and implementation projects.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and process improvement.
  • Provide expert advice on financial systems architecture, controls, integrations, and reporting.
  • Support technical solutions involving workflows, APIs, ETLs, data warehouses, dashboards, and reporting tools.
  • Ensure robust governance, data integrity, and compliance across finance systems.
  • Mentor others and help build organisational capability in financial systems and technology.

Ngā tohu me ngā wheako | Qualifications and experience

You're someone who enjoys sitting at the intersection of finance and technology, using systems, data, and innovation to solve complex problems and improve the way people work. You'll be naturally curious, proactive, and motivated by opportunities to drive meaningful change through digital solutions.  You will have:

  • Significant experience working with complex financial systems in a large or multifaceted organisation.
  • Advanced TechnologyOne experience, including CiA.
  • Experience delivering systems implementations, upgrades, and integration projects.
  • Knowledge of reporting, automation, workflows, APIs, ETLs, SQL, or related technologies.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • The ability to translate business needs into practical technology solutions.
  • A continuous improvement mindset and passion for innovation.
  • Professional accounting qualifications (CA, CPA or equivalent) and the ability to apply strong financial governance principles within a technology-enabled environment.

Nōu te rourou | What's in it for you

Working for the Council offers you a range of benefits including 5 weeks annual leave, flexible working options, health and wellbeing support, Council staff discounts and a range of learning and development programmes and opportunities.
