Job Description

Kitchen & Joinery Interior Designer

About Trends Kitchens

Trends Kitchens is one of the South Island’s leading bespoke kitchen and joinery businesses. We provide a complete design, manufacture and installation service, creating highly functional and beautifully finished spaces tailored to each client’s lifestyle, requirements, budget and property.

In addition to bespoke kitchens, our work includes laundries, bathroom cabinetry, built-in furniture, office and study spaces, wardrobes and cupboards, storage solutions, architectural joinery and commercial joinery.

We are seeking an experienced and creative Interior Designer with a particular specialisation in kitchen and bespoke cabinetry design to join our Cromwell team.

About the role

You will manage interior design projects from the initial client consultation and site assessment through concept development, detailed design, client approval, manufacture and installation.

Kitchen design will form a significant part of the position. You will also design other bespoke interior spaces and joinery solutions offered by Trends Kitchens, including laundries, bathroom cabinetry, wardrobes, built-in furniture, home offices, storage, architectural joinery and commercial joinery.

Key responsibilities

• Consult with private clients, building companies, and other stakeholders to establish each project’s objectives, functional requirements, preferred style, budget, timeframe and site constraints.

• Visit project sites to inspect and measure spaces, review existing plans and identify relevant spatial, structural, service, access and installation considerations.

• Analyse workflow, storage, accessibility, ergonomic, safety, durability and aesthetic requirements when planning interior layouts.

• Develop original design concepts and space plans for bespoke kitchens and related residential or commercial interior joinery.

• Use professional CAD and 3D design software (CADinet) to prepare layouts, plans, elevations, rendered concepts and detailed design documentation.

• Select and specify suitable cabinetry, benchtops, splashbacks, panelling, doors, drawers, hardware, handles, sinks, lighting, finishes and other interior products.

• Ensure proposed materials, fittings and design solutions are appropriate for the intended environment, client requirements and available budget.

• Present design proposals and quotations to clients, explain the proposed solutions and incorporate feedback and agreed changes.

• Prepare accurate specifications, pricing information and project records for use by project managers, draughters, manufacturing staff and installers.

• Follow up design proposals and maintain professional client relationships throughout the design and delivery process.

• Keep up to date with interior-design trends, products, materials, manufacturing capabilities and relevant building and health and safety requirements.

• Assist with maintaining a professional showroom and ensuring current samples, product information and design resources are available to clients.

What you will bring

At minimum, you will have:

• 3 years’ relevant experience designing kitchens, cabinetry or comparable bespoke interior spaces.

• Competence using professional CAD and 3D interior-design software (including CADinet) to produce accurate plans, elevations, visual presentations and technical documentation.

• A sound understanding of space planning, kitchen functionality, cabinetry, materials, finishes, hardware, manufacturing and installation considerations.

• The ability to assess and accurately measure project sites.

• Strong client-consultation, presentation and communication skills.

• Commercial awareness and the ability to prepare and present designs that meet both the client’s requirements and budget.

• Excellent organisation, accuracy and attention to detail.

• The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with designers, project managers, manufacturing staff, installers, builders and other project stakeholders.

• A portfolio or other examples demonstrating relevant interior-design work.

Key employment terms

• Employment type: Permanent, full-time.

• Pay: NZD $70,500 per annum

• Guaranteed hours: Fixed 35 hours per week.

• Location: Trends Kitchens, 3C Murray Terrace, Cromwell 9310. The position also involves travel to client and project sites throughout Central Otago and the surrounding service area.

What we offer

• The opportunity to design premium, custom-made interior spaces from concept through to installation.

• A varied portfolio of kitchen, residential, architectural and commercial joinery projects.

• Support from an established national team of designers, project managers, manufacturing specialists and installers.

• A professional and supportive working environment.

• Access to an extensive range of premium materials, products, finishes and manufacturing capabilities.

If you are an experienced interior designer who combines creativity with technical accuracy, practical space planning and excellent client service, we would like to hear from you.
