Database Administrator Jobs

Database administrator jobs are in steady demand across industries like financial services, government, and cloud-based tech environments. Roles range from junior database administrator positions through to senior database reliability engineers working with AWS PostgreSQL or SQL Server. Employers are looking for people who can keep data systems running securely, reliably, and at scale.

Day-to-day work

Database admins oversee the setup, tuning, and configuration of database servers. They manage SQL clustering and "always on" environments, handle backup and recovery, and ensure system performance is optimised. Many roles involve supporting application databases, collaborating with developers and DevOps teams, and maintaining database security in production and non-production settings.

Career progression

Careers as a database administrator can move into senior or specialist roles such as senior DBA, database reliability engineer, or cloud-focused database specialist. There are also pathways into leadership, with opportunities to guide teams working on critical infrastructure and application performance.

Skills employers look for

Employers often seek practical experience with SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Azure or AWS database platforms. Strong problem-solving skills, communication, and the ability to work under pressure are key. Knowledge of backup and recovery tools, clustering, and point-in-time recovery also features heavily in job descriptions.
