The Customer and Community Group is focused on building a well-connected, engaged, and thriving community by delivering essential services that enhance the social, cultural, and recreational life of Pōneke.

Within this group, the Digital and Technology team brings Council services to life through smart digital innovation and connected information systems. Our work underpins the Long-Term Plan, helping Wellingtonians live, work, and play in an inclusive, sustainable, and creative capital. Guided by human-centred design, we deliver the platforms, digital services, and ICT support that keep the organisation running and the city moving.

The ICT Infrastructure team is responsible for the design, operation, and continuous improvement of Council’s hybrid cloud and on-premise environments across AWS, Microsoft Azure, and enterprise infrastructure platforms. The team plays a critical role in enabling secure, reliable, and scalable digital services across Council and Council Controlled Organisations (CCOs), while also contributing significantly to cybersecurity maturity and resilience.


They support the continuous operation of enterprise applications and ensure a stable, secure, and high-performing environment for staff, partners, and the wider community.


This role sits at the heart of that capability.


Āu ake mahi | What you ’ll do

As a Cloud and Infrastructure Specialist, you will leverage modern cloud technologies to enhance Council operations, with a strong focus on security, scalability, cost optimisation, and operational reliability across hybrid environments.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing and supporting multi-cloud environments (AWS and Azure) alongside on-premise infrastructure
  • Ensuring secure, stable, and well-governed infrastructure aligned to cybersecurity frameworks (e.g. NIST) and compliance requirements (including PCI DSS)
  • Maintaining and improving Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or equivalent) practices and repositories
  • Supporting 24/7 on-call roster and contributing to incident response and critical event support
  • Delivering proactive and reactive infrastructure support, including monitoring, incident management, and service request fulfilment within SLAs
  • Leading automation and pipeline development to improve operational efficiency
  • Driving continuous improvement across cloud platforms, systems, and infrastructure services
  • Supporting change management processes to ensure safe, auditable production changes
  • Contributing to technical documentation and knowledge management across ICT Infrastructure
  • Participating in audit activities, including security, compliance, and environment reviews
  • Mentoring and supporting other ICT staff and sharing technical knowledge across teams

You will work across a modern enterprise stack including:

  • Microsoft Azure (including Entra, Defender and Sentinel)
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Windows Server (2008–2025)
  • Linux (Ubuntu, Red Hat, AWS Linux)
  • PowerShell and Python scripting and automation
  • Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, PKI, identity and authentication services
  • Networking and database fundamentals
  • Backup and disaster recovery platforms
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or equivalent)


Ngā tohu me ng ā wheako | What we ’re looking for

  • A degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent experience (4+ years in a similar role)
  • Strong hands-on experience in enterprise cloud environments (AWS and Azure)
  • Proven experience in infrastructure automation and IaC
  • Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles, vulnerabilities, and mitigation practices
  • Experience supporting hybrid infrastructure environments (cloud + on-premise)
  • Strong troubleshooting, incident management, and operational support capability
  • Experience working within change-controlled enterprise environments
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Experience working with audit processes and compliance frameworks (including PCI DSS)
