Day-to-day work
Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical systems across homes, schools, and industrial facilities. Typical work includes LED lighting upgrades, distribution board maintenance, power point and RCD installations, and heat pump or HVAC systems. Many roles involve diagnosing faults, performing compliance checks, and ensuring all work meets New Zealand’s strict electrical safety standards. Depending on the employer, you might work independently, as part of a small team, or alongside other trades on large-scale projects.
Career progression
As electricians can grow in many directions — from apprentice to registered tradesperson, supervisor, or trade manager. Skills employers look for
