About the role:


We are seeking a highly capable Legal Compliance and Risk Advisor to join our team based in our Auckland office. Reporting to and working alongside the Legal Support Director, you will be at the centre of Bell Gully’s legal compliance and risk function, providing trusted support across a broad range of compliance and risk matters, including those relating to legislative compliance, governance, our client obligations and our use of legal technology. This is a unique opportunity to play an integral role in safeguarding Bell Gully’s compliance and risk framework, enabling our people to deliver exceptional outcomes for our clients and the firm.


The Legal Compliance and Risk Advisor will work with partners, board members, senior management, lawyers, business support teams and external stakeholders on a wide range of compliance and risk related matters including:


  • acting as a trusted point of contact for partners and staff on queries relating to onboarding clients, including in relation to engagement terms and associated contractual requirements / governance reviews;
  • assisting in relation to our conflicts of interest process;
  • supporting the firm’s AML/CFT compliance framework, including policy and programme maintenance and training; and provide support for the firm’s AML Compliance Officer and team; and
  • undertaking the ongoing review and further development of the firm’s legal services compliance and risk management and business continuity tools, including those relating to cyber, privacy and AI.


To be successful in this role you must have:


  • A law degree and 6 or more years PQE in Corporate/Commercial law
  • Demonstrated experience in compliance and risk management, or functions requiring similar skill sets
  • Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to negotiate, influence and provide pragmatic solutions in complex legal, compliance and risk environments
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with strong organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate, complete and well-structured records through robust systems and processes
  • A commitment to teamwork, with the ability to work collaboratively and use initiative and sound judgement to deliver high-quality outcomes
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills and the ability to establish trust and credibility across all levels of the business
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal, compliance and risk matters clearly and effectively to a range of audiences
  • An interest in and/or understanding of the compliance, governance and risk management activities and considerations that support the responsible use of emerging technologies, including AI
  • Technical expertise of a nature that will support the set-up of compliance and risk management tools
  • Experience designing and delivering training or facilitating workshops in person and virtual environments
  • A high level of integrity, professionalism and discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
