Job Description

What’s Up is a nationwide professional, free and confidential phone and online counselling service for children and young people aged between 5 and 19 years. What’s Up counsellors help young callers to find their own solutions to the challenges and issues they face, equipping them with strategies to deal with issues now and in the future.


The Supervisor role leads the practice and daily operation of the What’s Up service and supports quality improvement and service development. The Supervisor works collaboratively with the Manager and provides leadership to the team in the Manager's absence.


This role is 40 hours per fortnight with a range of shifts, including evenings and weekends.


Our Tāmaki Makaurau Regional Hub is in Māngere. However, this role is currently a hybrid model with most shifts being online from home.


Skills & Experience required:


  • 3+ years' experience in social services/counselling environments (required)
  • A relevant social services qualification (required)
  • Demonstrated experience in supervision of staff, leadership & developing effective teams, sound management and providing training to staff
  • Excellent communication and great leadership skills are key
  • Knowledge of best practice standards to achieve continual quality improvement
  • You’ll also need resilience, flexibility, a commitment to best practice and the ability to build strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • A passion for working with young people is necessary
  • A private space suitable for confidential conversations

As a supervisor of What's Up you will be making a meaningful contribution to tamariki safety, contributing to providing early intervention mental wellbeing for tamariki and rangitahi in Aotearoa New Zealand where every child has the opportunity to shine.
