Job Title: Rotating Internship – Companion Animal Hospital

Department: School of Veterinary Science – Companion Animal Hospital

Location: Manawatū Campus, Palmerston North


Embark on a rewarding 12.5-month rotating internship designed to develop your clinical capability, broaden your experience, and launch your pathway toward specialty training. Join our esteemed team of European, American, and Australian board-certified surgeons, criticalists, and experienced practitioners in a supportive teaching-hospital environment.


Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About the role

Under the mentorship of senior faculty clinicians, interns rotate through:

  • Internal Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Anaesthesia
  • Emergency & Critical Care


You’ll gain hands-on experience with both referral and first-opinion cases, supported by specialists, emergency doctors, and experienced faculty clinicians.


Interns may also elect to rotate through:

  • General Practice
  • Cardiology
  • Radiology


This flexibility allows you to tailor your program and create a bespoke internship experience aligned with your career aspirations.


Our Companion Animal Hospital offers a world-class educational environment to complement your clinical rotations, including case rounds, journal club, multidisciplinary rounds, lectures, practical skills labs, presentations, and teaching opportunities. You will also receive support to publish a case report or small research project, along with optional exposure to contracted services such as dentistry and cardiology.

Mōu | About you

You will hold a veterinary professional degree (e.g., BVSc, DVM, VMD), from either:

  • an AVMA-accredited veterinary school, or
  • a programme recognised by the New Zealand Veterinary Council
  • (NZVC) for full registration in New Zealand (see the NZVC website for
  • clarification on recognised qualifications
  • https://vetcouncil.org.nz/Web/Web/1.Support-andInformation/Vets/Registration.aspx ).
  • You’ll be a motivated and enthusiastic veterinary graduate seeking to grow your skills across a wide range of clinical areas in companion animal practice.
  • New graduates and suitably qualified overseas candidates (eligible for NZVC registration and a New Zealand work visa) are welcome.
  • A full driver’s licence is required.
