Job Description


We are seeking a reliable and mechanically minded Wastewater Plant Operator to join our Napier Tannery team. Reporting to the Tannery Manager and Plant Engineer, this role is responsible for the effective operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the wastewater treatment systems and chrome recycling plant.


This is a hands‑on operational role that supports both environmental compliance and production efficiency. You will work closely with the engineering team, tannery operations, and other site departments to ensure the plant runs safely, smoothly, and within resource consent limits.


The role includes shift work, call‑outs, and supporting a two‑operator model to ensure adequate coverage across varying production demands.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Operate the chrome recycling plant and wastewater treatment systems
  • Monitor plant performance, flows, chemical dosing, and equipment condition
  • Respond promptly to alarms, faults, and abnormal conditions
  • Carry out routine cleaning, inspections, and basic mechanical maintenance
  • Reinstate equipment safely after maintenance, including guards and utilities
  • Conduct sampling, testing, and compliance monitoring
  • Maintain accurate logs, reports, and operational documentation
  • Support shift coverage and call‑out requirements
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Work collaboratively with the Tannery Manager, Plant Engineer, and wider site teams


Qualifications


The ideal candidate will bring:


  • Mechanical aptitude and hands‑on problem‑solving ability
  • Experience in wastewater, industrial plant, engineering, or similar environments (advantageous)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to compliance
  • Ability to work independently and follow procedures
  • Good communication skills and a positive, team‑focused attitude
  • Willingness to work shifts and respond to call‑outs
  • Experience with environmental monitoring or sampling (beneficial but not essential)
  • Training will be provided for the right candidate.
