Job Description

As we gear up for the 2027 school year, we're looking to grow our team of Aquatic Education Instructors (SwimWell Instructors) to help support the delivery of our aquatic education programmes in 2027. If you’re passionate about making a difference, love working with people and think you’ll get a buzz out of teaching an essential life skill then we want to hear from you!


Starting mid-January, we have permanent part-time Instructor vacancies across all our facilities including:

  • Karori Pool
  • Keith Spry Pool (Johnsonville)
  • Tawa Pool
  • Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre (Kilbirnie)
  • Freyberg pool


With a variety of shifts available across weekdays and weekends (during school terms), this is a role that can work around other study, work, or life commitments you may have! We are looking for people who can commit to at least two shifts a week for the duration of 2027 at a minimum, although ideally we’re looking for people who keen to join our team longer term.


The shift times we have are:

  • School hours (during term time - school holidays off): Monday to Friday - shifts starting from 9am/10am and finishing from 2pm/2.30pm
  • After school: Monday to Friday – shifts starting from 3.30pm/4pm and finishing at approximately 6.30pm
  • Weekends: Saturday AND/OR Sunday – morning shifts starting from 8am/9am and finishing at approximately 12.30pm; afternoon shifts starting at approximately 12pm and finishing at approximately 4.30pm


What you’ll do – A chance to make a difference

SwimWell Instructors teach learn-to-swim lessons for the Pōneke community. From babies taking their first splash to adults learning to feel at home in the water, our programme caters to all ages and a diverse range of community needs.

Our team is passionate about teaching a lifesaving skill and helping people discover the joy of being in the water. No two days are the same, and every lesson is an opportunity to make a real difference.


About you - No Experience, No Problem!

At SwimWell we are not looking for experienced instructors, we are looking for great people!


You do not need a swimming background or any previous instructing/teaching experience to apply as we provide comprehensive training and ongoing coaching and development to help you become the best instructor you can be.


We are looking for people who:

  • Are passionate about helping others learn and develop
  • Can build connections with people from a variety of ages, cultures, and backgrounds
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Are creative, adaptable and confident working in fast paced environments
  • Are excited to learn and grow


To be eligible you must be:

  • Over 16 years old
  • Residing in Wellington in 2027 until the end of term 4 2027 (approximately late December 2027)
  • Have the right to work in New Zealand

Attending these sessions is completely optional and they are not a part of the recruitment process.

Assessment Details

Our team at SwimWell will be screening applications as they are received so we encourage you to get your application in quickly. If your application is long listed, you will receive a phone call from one of the team to complete a phone interview.

Following this, if you are successful in being short-listed, you will be invited to attend an assessment centre, which will take approximately 2.5 hours.


The assessment centres dates we have scheduled are:

  1. Sunday 18 th October (mid- afternoon)
  2. Sunday 25th October (please note, this is labour weekend) (mid-afternoon)
  3. Friday 30th October (morning)
  4. Sunday 1 November (mid-afternoon)
  5. Friday 6th November (morning)
  6. Sunday 8 November (mid-afternoon)


Pre-employment Checks

All employees must be prepared to obtain and maintain a Police Vetting check, the results of which will be held on your employee file if employed.

Please note this role is safety sensitive and will require you to undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol, and health testing.

The Council uses the AS/NZ drug standard to determine the cut off levels for drug testing.  Some prescription drugs may be included within this standard.
