At Barnardos Aotearoa, we know fundraising is about much more than asking for money. It's about helping people feel connected to a cause they care deeply about and showing them the difference their support makes.


We're looking for a Donor Communications Advisor who can create meaningful communications that inspire people to take action, stay engaged and continue supporting tamariki and whānau across Aotearoa.


From acquisition campaigns and donor journeys to appeals, stewardship and legacy giving, you'll help create a supporter experience that is engaging, authentic and impactful.


Working with the wider Fundraising and Engagement team, you'll develop communications that strengthen donor relationships and help supporters understand the difference they're making. You'll connect fundraising strategy, storytelling and supporter insights to create campaigns people genuinely want to be part of.


Because attracting a donor is only the beginning. The real impact comes when someone chooses to give again. When they stay connected to the cause. When they encourage others to get involved. When they leave a gift in their Will. When they become part of a movement that helps change children's lives for generations.

This is a permanent full time position (40 hours per week).

The role is based in Wellington and will require some travel across the motu.



About the role

As our Donor Communications Advisor, you'll develop and deliver communications that strengthen supporter relationships and grow fundraising revenue.


You will be responsible for:

  • Developing donor journeys that build engagement and encourage long-term support.
  • Writing compelling fundraising appeals, stewardship communications, and impact communications across print and digital channels.
  • Helping develop campaigns that grow fundraising income and supporter loyalty.
  • Working closely with Fundraising, Marketing and Communications colleagues to bring integrated campaigns to life.
  • Using data and insights to understand what motivates supporters and improve results.
  • Ensuring supporters receive meaningful, timely communications that demonstrate the impact of their generosity.
  • Championing best practice donor communications across the fundraising programme.


Who we're looking for


You're a skilled communicator with a passion for fundraising and storytelling.


You understand that great fundraising communications aren't just about what you ask people to do, they're about making people feel connected, valued and inspired.


You're equally comfortable implementing strategy and rolling up your sleeves to deliver campaigns. You can juggle multiple projects, build strong relationships across teams and use insights to continually improve outcomes.



Ideally, you'll bring :


  • At least five years' experience in fundraising communications or a closely related communications role.
  • Experience writing successful direct mail fundraising appeals and donor communications.
  • Strong campaign management and project leadership skills.
  • Excellent writing and editing abilities across print and digital channels.
  • Experience using audience insights, testing and data to improve engagement and fundraising results.
  • A relevant qualification in communications or English or a related field.
