Ākau Tangi Sports Centre aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the Pōneke community by increased physical activity through participation in sport and recreation.


Ākau Tangi Sports Centre is a 12-court facility in Kilbirnie, known for its high-quality programmes, events, and community engagement – you can have a look at our centre here . The team at this busy facility aim to improve the health and wellbeing of the Pōneke community by increased physical activity through participation in sport and recreation.

As we continue to improve the services we offer the Pōneke community, we’re excited to announce we have four permanent part-time roles for our Operations team now available.


Our Operations team are the welcoming face of Ākau Tangi Sports Centre – you will be the first to welcome members of the Pōneke community to our facility and deliver outstanding customer service to the diverse range of visitors.


You will support the smooth delivery of programmes and events by setting up and packing down equipment, maintaining a clean, safe, and well-presented facility environment, and providing accurate information about our services while responding to customer feedback. You'll also carry out administrative tasks such as bookings, enrolments, and payments.

To be successful in this team, you will be a natural people person with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You’ll enjoy physical work and take pride in presentation and teamwork. You'll be a reliable team player who can also work independently and take initiative. Previous experience in customer service or recreation is a bonus, but not essential.


The permanent part-time packages we have available in the Operations team are:

Package 1 – 16 hours per week

  • Friday 6.30am to 3.00pm
  • Saturday 2.00pm to 10.30pm

Package 2 – 16 hours per week

  • Sunday 2.00pm to 10.30pm
  • Monday 2.00pm to 10.30pm

Package 3 – 16 hours per week

  • Monday 7.00am to 3.30pm
  • Thursday 7.00am to 3.30pm

Package 4 – 8 hours per week

  • Friday 2.00pm to 10.30pm

Assessment Details

Our team at Ākau Tangi will be screening applications as they are received so we encourage you to get your application in quickly. If your application is long listed, you will receive a phone call from one of the team to complete a phone interview (approximately 15mins).

Following the phone interview, if you are successful in being short-listed, you will be invited to attend an interview at Ākau Tangi Sports Centre.


Pre-employment Checks

All employees must be prepared to obtain and maintain a Police Vetting check, the results of which will be held on your employee file if employed.

Please note this role is safety sensitive and will require you to undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol, and health testing, the results of which will be held on your employee file if successful.

The Council uses the AS/NZ drug standard to determine the cut off levels for drug testing.  Some prescription drugs may be included within this standard.
