Te Wero – The Challenge


The Far North is already experiencing the impacts of a changing climate. Building long-term resilience requires sound evidence, effective planning and decisions shaped alongside communities and tangata whenua.


We are looking for a Climate Adaptation Planner to help deliver Te Hōtaka Urutau Hapori | Community Adaptation Programme. In this role, you will apply your planning expertise, technical knowledge and practical experience to support community-led adaptation planning across the district.


Working closely with our Adaptation Programme Lead, you will help turn climate risk information into practical, high-quality planning advice and adaptation pathways that align with Council’s strategic priorities and regulatory responsibilities.


In this varied role, you will:


  • Support climate adaptation planning and policy development.
  • Assess climate and natural hazard risks and adaptation options.
  • Engage with communities, tangata whenua and key stakeholders.
  • Facilitate workshops, hui and collaborative planning processes.
  • Prepare reports and advice for decision-makers.
  • Help integrate adaptation outcomes across Council planning and infrastructure activities.
  • Monitor programme progress, risks and outcomes.
  • Build and maintain strong regional and cross-sector partnerships.


I ā koe - About You


You are a thoughtful and practical planner who understands the challenges of adapting to a changing climate. You can work with technical information, navigate evolving policy settings and communicate complex issues clearly to a range of audiences.


You bring:


  • A postgraduate degree or equivalent qualification in planning, climate change, environmental management, environmental engineering or another relevant discipline.
  • At least two years’ experience in resource management planning, climate adaptation planning and/or Dynamic Adaptive Policy Pathways.
  • A strong understanding of current and emerging climate change issues.
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and He Whakaputanga, and/or lived experience of tikanga, whakapapa and te ao Māori.
  • Strong research, analytical, written communication and relationship-management skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with communities, tangata whenua, technical specialists and stakeholders.
  • A progressive, solutions-focused approach and a commitment to achieving positive outcomes for Far North communities.

  • The salary for this position is Grade 17 within Council's salary structure (Band: $94,208 – $110,883 per annum) dependent on qualifications and experience, plus Kiwi Saver.
